The effects of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) roots on the reproductive aspects in male Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

Research Abstract

The Japanese quail is considered one of the most significant species in the poultry industry. However, the high male-to-female ratio results in the aggressive behavior of males. Dietary strategies that improve the properties of semen could reduce the number of males required to maintain optimal fertility and reduce aggressive behavior. Therefore, this study aims to provide insight into the possible improving efm fect of ginger roots on the reproductive aspects of Japanese male quails. To achieve this objective, powder of Ginger roots was administrated to 2 groups of quails (10, and 15 g/Kg feed) from 7 days until 70 days of age. Some males were reared singly in cages (n = 40 for each group) to assess sperm quality and other males (n = 32 for each group) were raised with females to assess fertility and sperm-egg penetration. Additionally, biochemical tests and histological examination were also performed. When compared to the control group, dietary inclusion of Ginger at a dose of 15 g caused more improvement in ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, motility, viability and sperm-egg penetration. Whereas, the motility and fertility percentages of sperms were equipotent in both doses. Dose-dependent increases were found in the cloacal gland area and volume, as well as foam production and weight. Both doses resulted in a significant reduction in plasma total cholesterol along with an elevation cin plasma testosterone and lipid peroxides. Potential bioactivity of Phoenix dactylifera fruits, leaves, and seeds against prostate and pancreatic cancer cells

Research Abstract

The use of functional foods’ phytochemicals in the chemoprevention of different cancer diseases has become one of the hot scientific areas in the clinical nutrition field. For instance, the Khalas palm cultivar (KPC; Phoenix dactylifera) is one of the natural sustainable resources that have high bioactivity and functionality. This study aimed to investigate the antiproliferative activity and mode of action of KPC’s different parts on prostate (Pc3) and pancreatic (panc1) cancer cells at a molecular level. In the methods, KPC’s leaves, seeds, and fruits’ chemical composition and phytochemical analysis were analyzed. Also, the cytotoxic effects of each extract were assessed against pc3 and panc1 cell lines. Besides, induction of apoptosis, cell cycle analysis, and gene expression of both Cap3 and Cap9 were studied. The obtained results indicated that KPC leaves extract exhibited the highest significant (P < 0.01) anti-proliferation activity against the utilized cancer cell lines compared to fruits and seeds extracts. Also, there were significant (P < 0.05) differences in the phenolic contents, flavonoid of compounds, and antioxidant power of the leaves when compared to the seeds and fruits. Additionally, the highest cytotoxic effect (lowest IC50) was recorded with leave extract than seeds and fruits. Meanwhile, the seeds extract induced (P < 0.05) the apoptosis and arrested cells in the G2/M phase as well as up-regulated the gene expression of the apoptotic-related genes (Casp3 and Casp9) compared to the control group. Effect of vitamin E, D-limonene, and their combination on nulliparous rabbit reproductive performance

Research Abstract

Oxidative status is important in reproductive performance and using two natural antioxidants is more beneficial than one in nulliparous rabbits. The goal, effect of vitamin E (VitE), D-limonene (DL), and VitE+DL on maternal LBW (MLBW), conception (CR), pregnancy (PR), and kindling rates (KR), gestation length (GL), total litter size at birth (TLSB) and weaning (TLSW), live kits at birth (LKB) and weaning (LKW), dead kits at birth (DKB) and weaning (DKW), kits mortality rate at weaning (KMRW), Kit weight at birth (KWB) and weaning (KWW), total kit weight at birth (TKWB) and weaning (TKWW), and concentrations of progesterone (P4) and Malondialdehyde (MDA), during first two pregnancies. A total of 24 healthy female WNZ rabbits were randomly selected and assigned into four groups (6/each). Control (animals injected with 1.0 mL propylene glycol), VitE (60 mg IM injection/animal, 2X/week pre-mating and 3X post-mating until midpregnancy, DL (20 mg IM injection/animal, 2X/week pre-mating and 1X at mating, and VitE+DL (IM injection/animal with the same doses and times applied in VitE and DL groups. All animals were treated during 1st pregnancy only. The results confirmed that animals treated with VitE+DL gained significant maternal LBW in 1st pregnancy, reduced dead kit number at birth and kit mortality rate at weaning, increased live kits and total kit weight at birth and weaning in the two pregnancies, and also increased significantly kit weight at birth and weaning in the treatments than controls in the two pregnancies, and DL was greater in 1st pregnancy. Progesterone concentrations in mid-pregnancy rose significantly in VitE+DL during 1st pregnancy and DL in 2nd pregnancy. Malondialdehyde concentrations dropped significantly in VitE and VitE+DL in mid-pregnancy in the two pregnancies. Eventually, the integration of VitE and DL displayed their unique properties for improving productive and reproductive performance in nulliparous rabbits.

Effect of fat extraction methods on the fatty acids composition of bovine milk using gas chromatography

Research Abstract

Milk fat is a complex natural fat and contains around 400 fatty acids. The objectives of this study were to extract fat from bovine milk using two different methods, including Bligh and Dyer and Mojonnier, and to determine the fatty acid content in the extracted fats using gas chromatography (GC). No differences (p > .05) were detected in the fat content and fatty acids content as a percentage of total fat (FA%TF) extracted using both methods. No differences (p > .05) were detected in some saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs) extracted from both methods, such as C11:0 (undecylic acid), C16:0 (palmitic acid), C18:0 (stearic acid), C14:1 (myristoleic acid), and C16:1 (palmitoleic acid). Impact of Phosphine Fumigation Treatments on the Vitality of Wheat Grains at Different Storage Perio

To study the effect of phosphine fumigation treatments (two tablet/ton exposure for 24 hours; two tablet/ton for 48 hours; two tablet/ton for 72 hours, four tablet/ton for 24 hours; four tablet/ton for 48 hours; four tablet/ton for 72 hours; six tablet/ton for 24 hours; six tablet/ton for 48 hours and six tablet/ton for 72 hours ) on the vitality of bread wheat grains cv. Giza 171 at different storage periods (without storage, 3, 6, and 9 months) a factorial experiment was layout using a complete randomized design with three replications at the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Youssef Mohamed Omar, Plant Protection Department, on the middle fifth floor of the educational building of the Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University during the period from 26 May 2022 to 3 March 2023. Wheat grain, Giza 171, was obtained from the Agronomy Department Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University. Glass jars were used and sealed with metal clips with a capacity of 1.5 kg. Tablets of aluminum phosphide were crushed in a crucible in isolation from moisture. Weights were prepared for each jar and placed in cotton, then the jars were closed until the end of the exposure period, and then opened for ventilation for 24 hours, then re-sealed and measurements began. Hydrogen peroxide pretreatment assisted phytoremediation of sodium dodecyl sulfate by Juncus acutus L

Research Abstract

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) an anionic surfactant pollutant has emerged as a serious hazard to the aquatic and terrestrial environment. Due to physical and chemical methodological difficulties for SDS removal, phytoremediation techniques are efficient alternative strategies to tackle such adversities. Juncus acutus L. (J. acutus) is a pioneer wetland species that has been recently exploited for phytoremediation purposes. To our knowledge, the role of exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), in improving the phytoextraction of SDS has not been examined yet. In this study, pretreatment foliar spray of H2O2 (15 mM) combined with two levels of SDS (50 and 100 ppm) in water culture was evaluated to remove SDS contamination and add value to the phytoremediation process.

Evaluating the Impact of Neonicotinoid and Sulfoximine Pesticides on Honey Bee Workers, Apis mellifera L., under Laboratory Conditions

Research Abstract

Application of pesticides can have a negative impact on pollinating honey bees, Apis mellifera L., ranging from sublethal to lethal concentrations. Consequently, it is important to comprehend any possible impacts of pesticides. Herein, we evaluated the toxicity of specific pesticides (Sulfoxaflor, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and acetamiprid) on A. mellifera workers after exposure of 24, 48, 72, and 96 hrs under laboratory conditions. As a result, sulfoxaflor was considered the most toxic compound among the tested pesticides after 24-h of exposure. Further, acetamiprid was found least toxic pesticide. The same trend of toxicity on A. mellifera was observed after 48, 72, and 96 hrs of exposure. These results of the current investigation suggested that sulfoxaflor might be harmful to honey bee workers.This demonstrates the extraordinary sensitivity of local honey bee to routinely applied agricultural pesticides, which may have an impact on the colony level due to the extensive usage of these pesticides in Egypt.

Grains of Giza 171 cv. were obtained from the Agronomy Department Farm, Agriculture Faculty, Assiut University. The obtained result showed that the tested storageperiods had a highlysignificant effect on all studied traits.Thus, the maximum mean values of germination power (%), germination percentage (%), roots and shoot length (cm), and seedling dry weight(g) traits were recorded at the begging of storage then a gradual decreas eoccurred. In addition, treating wheat grains with phosphine at different doses for different period sgained a significant increase in all studied traits compared to the control treatment (without fumigation), whilethere were no noticeable differences between most of the phosphine treatments themselves werefound. Therefore,we suggest under the conditions of this study,wheat grains could be treated with 2 tablets of phosphine for a period of 72 hour storeduce the dose and increase the exposure time which could reduce the harmful effects of excessive doses of phosphine.

Effect of Planting and Weed Control Methods on Yield and its Attributes of Egyptian Cotton (Giza 90 cultivar)

Research Abstract

A field experiment wasconducted during the 2019 and 2020 summer seasons to investigate the effect of different weed control treatments namely; Butralin as pre-emergence herbicide (2.5 L/fed.), butralin (2.5 L/ fed.) + hand hoeing once at 30 days after planting (DAP), hand hoeing thrice at 15, 30 and 45 DAP and un-weeded treatment under different planting methods, i.e., rows and raised beds planting, on weeds density, yield and its attributes of Giza 90 cotton cultivar. Results indicated that, the density of the weeds was decreasedsignificantly with all studied weed control treatments compared with un-weeded treatment (control) in the two growing seasons. In addition, the plant height, number of sympodial branches, opening bolls per plant, seed weight and seed cotton yield were also increased with allstudied weed control treatmentsover weedy check. As well as, hand hoeing thrice at 15,30 and 45 DAP treatment gave a significantly higher seed cotton yield as compared to the other studied weed control treatments in both seasons. Furthermore, the obtained result showed that among the tested planting methods, beds width 120 cm planting gave the best results in terms of controlling weeds, reducing dry weight of weeds, increasing sympodial branches plant-1, total number of bolls plant-1, number of mature bolls plant-1, seed cotton weight
