the study revealed that Mean ± SD of teachers’ age were 38.78 ± 8.83, 26.7% of the teacher attended training program about
first aid, there was statistical significant differences between total score of teachers’ knowledge (p-value = .000) in pre and
immediate post-test. There was statistical significant differences between the performance level of preparatory schools teachers
(p-value = .000*). The study concluded that: there was improvement of teachers’ knowledge and practices regarding first aid
after implementation of the training program. The study recommended that: Continuous educational and training programs for

Ulcerative colitis: Effect of a nursing educational booklet on the severity of the disease and patients quality of life‏

Research Abstract

Background: Quality of life (QoL) is the most critical issue for chronic illnesses patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a nursing educational booklet on the severity of disease and quality of life for patients with ulcerative colitis in El Rajhi liver Hospital at Assiut University.

Methods:Research design; a quiz experimental research design was utilized to carry out this study. Setting: The study was conducted in Tropical Medicine and Gastroenterology department and outpatient clinic at El Rajhi liver Hospital at Assiut University. PatientsRandom sample of adult patients (60), male and female, their age ranging from 18 – 65 years old. The sample was categorized into two equal groups, 30 patients for study group who have received a nursing educational booklet in addition to the routine care and 30 patients for a control group who were received a routine hospital care.

Tools: Tool I: An Interview Questionnaire Sheet which included three parts (patient assessment, Short Quality of Life Questionnaire scale for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and partial Mayo scoring index assessment scale for ulcerative colitis activity) and tool II: A nursing educational booklet.

Results: There was a great increase in the mean score of the Quality of Life Questionnaire in the study group (47.6±2.43) than those patients in the control group (27.87±5.78) with a statistically significant difference (<0.001**). One quarter of patients in the study group were complaining from severe disease stage compared to half of the patients in the control group, and there was a negative correlation between Quality of Life Questionnaire scores and the severity of disease between study and control groups of patients which means as the severity of the disease decreased the quality of patients’ life score increased.

Conclusion: This study proved that; Patient education is a valuable means for decreasing ulcerative colitis severity which affect positively on the patients’ quality of life.

Recommendations: Education for chronic diseases should be a part hospital policy, Distribution of the educational booklet for all ulcerative colitis patients, and ffurther studies on larger sample from different geographical areas in Egypt to generalize the results.

Research Abstract

Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation involves the intravenous infusion of autologous or allogeneic stem cells to reestablish hematopoietic function in patients whose bone marrow or immune system is damaged. This study aimed to modify the fluid balance chart for nurses to monitor fluid volume disturbance in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Design: A prospective, single - centered research design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was conducted at the Bone marrow transplantation unit at South – Egypt Cancer Institution. Subject: A purposive sample of 25 adult conscious patients undergoing stem cell transplant, from both sexes and age range between (20 – 65years).Tools: three tools were used; a structured interview questionnaire, modified fluid balance chart, and a fluid volume disturbance monitoring sheet. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the modified and routine fluid charts regarding the mean amount of daily fluid balance (10750.00 ± 409 ml) and (8333. 63 ± 388 ml) respectively with (P.value = 0.001). Conclusion: modification of fluid balance chart has a great effect on accurate monitoring of the fluid intake, output, and fluid volume disturbances.

Methods: Research design: A quiz-experimental research design was being utilized. Subjects and methods: A convenience sample of 120 adult patients was divided into four groups, 30 patients for each. Patients’ mean age was (42.6±12.8) years from both sexes. The study was conducted at Internal medicine, General surgery departments and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center at Assiut University Hospitals. Tools: Two tools were being utilized: patient assessment sheet and colonoscopy preparation educational methods.

Results: More than half of the patients (53.3%) in routine nursing instructions group have a bad level of bowel cleanliness with mean score of Boston bowel preparation scale (BBPS) of 2.7±2.4, more than two thirds of patients (70%) at preparation video group have a fair level with mean score of BBPS of 4.7±2.2, while more than half of patients in booklet and both video & booklet groups (53.3% & 56.7%) have an excellent level with mean score of BBPS of 5.9±2.4 & 6.7±1.2, respectively. Conclusions: More than half of the patients at educational booklet and both video & booklet groups have an excellent level, more

more than two thirds of patients at preparation video group have a fair level, while more than half of the patients in routine nursing instructions group have a bad level of bowel cleanliness.
