Effect of Implementing Nursing Educational Program on Re-admission for Patients with Heart Failure

Research Abstract

Abstract:

Back ground: About 20-50% of patients with heart failure are readmitted to hospitals in 14 day to 6 months of hospital discharge worldwide. Aim of the study: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of implementing nursing educational program on re-admission rate for patients with heart failure. Research design: Quasi experimental research design was utilized to conduct this study. (study and control group). Setting: This study was carried out in the cardiovascular medicine department at Assiut University Heart Hospital. Sample: The study sample consisted of (50) heart failure patients for each group; ages ranged from 18-65 years old. Tool: Patient assessment sheet and re-admission assessment sheet. Results: The highest percentages of causes for readmission in this study were drug non-compliance (25.8%), bad dietary habits (22.6%), uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (22.6%), ischemia (19.4%), anemia (16.1%) and worsening left ventricular function (16.1%), there was a significant difference between study and control groups regarding their mean frequency of readmission with a p-value of (0.041) and period from discharge to 1st re-admission with a p-value of (0.044). Conclusion: After 6 months of follow-up, there was a significant difference between groups regarding their mean frequency of re-admission with a p-value of (0.041) and period from discharge to 1st re-admission with a p-value of (0.044).

Risk Factors for Frequency of Readmission among Heart Failure Patients

Research Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify risk factors for frequency of readmission among heart failure patients at Assiut University Hospital. Research design: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: This study was carried out in the cardiovascular medicine department at Assiut University Hospital. sample: The study sample consists of a (100) heart failure patients; ages ranged from 18-65 years old. Tools: Two tools were used; tool one: a patient assessment sheet, tool two: re-admission assessment sheet. Results: Frequency of patients’ readmission in a period of (6) months was (31%), (64.5%) have readmitted once, (29.03%) twice and (6.45%) three times. Highest percent was readmitted within 60 days of discharge (38.7%), (19.4%) readmitted within 30 days of discharge and (19.4%) readmitted within 90 days of discharge. Drug non-compliance, diet poor compliance, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, ischemia, anemia and worsening left ventricular function were the major risk factors for HF patientsreadmission. Conclusion: Frequency of patients’ readmission was (31%). Drug non-compliance, diet poor compliance, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, ischemia, anemia and worsening left ventricular function were the major risk factors for HF patients readmission. Recommendations: Design educational programs for patients with HF to reduce frequency of readmission of those patients.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Ischemic Heart Disease among Patients Undergoing Coronary Angiography

Research Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify the prevalence and risk factors of ischemic heart disease among patients undergoing coronary angiography. Subjects and Method: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized. This study was carried out in the cardiovascular medicine department at Assiut University Hospital. The study sample consisted of all patients attended to the cardiovascular medicine department and underwent coronary angiography within 6 months period from October 2016 to April 2017 500 patients (317 males and 183 females). A structured interview sheet was utilized to collect data includes Data related to socio-demographic characteristics, medical data and risk factors of ischemic heart disease. Results: Incidence of ischemic heart disease among patients underwent coronary angiography at Assiut University Hospital over six months was 398 patients out of 500 patients (79.6%). Most of the studied patients were males and their age ranged from 40-65 years. Smoking, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and family history were the major risk factors for IHD respectively. Conclusion: There was highly significant statistical relationship between the age, sex, diabetes and smoking and the prevalence of IHD with a p-value of (0.001).  Recommendations: Screening of those living in rural areas for IHD, and application of life style modification programs for the modifiable risk factors which leading to IHD.

Quality of Nursing Care Provided for Neonates on Mechanical Ventilation

Research Abstract

Background:-Mechanical ventilation plays an important role in reducing neonatal mortality and morbidity rate. Providing high-quality nursing care for neonates on mechanical ventilation help in improving health and wellbeing of neonates undergoing mechanical ventilation. So this study aimed to assess the quality of nursing care provided for neonates on mechanical ventilation. Research design, a descriptive research design was utilized in the current study. Sample. A convenience sampling of 59 nurses working at a neonatal intensive care unit in Assiut University Children Hospital. Two tools were used to collect the necessary data, interview questionnaire sheet, and observational checklists. Results of this study revealed that less than half (47.5%) of the studied nurses had a good level of knowledge while more than one third (39%) of them had a good level of care regarding the quality of nursing care provided for neonates on mechanical ventilation. There were no statistically significant differences between the total mean score of nurses' knowledge and practice (P =0.285). The study concluded that less than half of the nurses had a good level of knowledge and practice. So the researcher recommended that periodical educational training programs for nurses working at neonatal intensive care unit are mandatory for updating knowledge and to maintain an effective practice.
