EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT METHODS FOR DIAGNOSIS OF CRYPTOSPORIDIUM IN DIARRHEIC PATIENTS

Research Abstract
The aim of this study was to recognize the prevalence of Cryptosporidium among cases of diarrhea, also to correlate cryptosporidiosis infection with epidemiological factors as age group, sex, residence and animal contact. Also, the study aimed to compare different methods of diagnosis as modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining, ELISA, IF AT. The present study was performed on 120 patients complaining of severe, moderate and mild diarrhea (55, 39, and 26cases) respectively. They were 80 males (66.7%) and 40 (33.3%) females, their mean age was (32.45±3.56). Cryptosporidium is important and dangerous cause of diarrhea especially in developing countries. Cryptosporidium is mostly accompanied with severe form of diarrhea, in young age group living in rural areas with animal contact. Modified Ziehl Neelsen stain gave good sensitivity but less specificity, while IF AT gave good sensitivity and specificity. ELISA proved more reliable, rapid, especially for epidemiological study.

COMPARISON OF INDIRECT HAEMAGGLUTINATION TEST AND ELISA IN RELATION TO KATO METHOD FOR DIAGNOSIS OF SCHISTOSOMA MANSONI

Research Abstract
This study aimed to compare three methods for diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis , Kato-katz technique , ELISA and IHA, and to evaluate the results obtained by these techniques with their sensitivity and specificity This work was conducted on 75 patients: 46 of them were below 25 years age and 29 were above, 48 of them were males and 27 were females. They were complaining of different manifestations of intestinal schistosomiasis, subjected to history taking and clinical examinations. Stool examination was performed by Kato-Katz technique. Blood samples were withdrawn for antibodies against S. mansoni by ELISA and Indirect Haemagglutination test (IHA) S. mansoni eggs were detected among 38 (50.7%) by microscopic examination (18 of them ˂25 years and 20 cases ˃25 years of old), while antibodies were recorded among 43 (57.3%) and 45 (60%) by both ELISA and IHA respectively, non significant differences were recorded between the three applied methods of examination On comparing IHA with Kato-Katz technique as gold standard method of diagnosis , it showed 80% sensitivity and 93.3% specificity. On other hand ELISA revealed high sensitivity and specificity 96.9% and 90.7% respectively. On comparing Kato-Katz technique to IHA it showed low sensitivity and specificity; 78.9% and 59.5% respectively

SOME STUDIES ON CAPILLARIA PHILIPINENSIS AND ITS MYSTERIOUS TRIP FROM PHILIPPINES TO EGYPT
(REVIEW ARTICLE)

Research Abstract
The intestinal capillariasis caused by Capillaria philippinensisis a life-threa-tening disease in humans that causes severe enteropathy (Cross, 1998).The outcome of the disease may be fatal if untreated in due time. The first human case of intestinal capillariasis was reported in the Philippines in 1963 while the first record of the disease in Thailand was in 1973,then more and more cases were detected from both Philippines and Thailand. No doubt, Capillaria philippinensis is a mysterious nematode parasite and intestinal capillariasis is a mysterious disease. It is now about half a century since the discovery of the first case of the disease in Philippines without answering many questions concerning the parasite's taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, diagnosis, pathology, clinical symptoms, mode of transmission as well as how it was transported to Egypt and how it started to spread and progressed in most Egyptian governorates; particularly those of Middle Egypt. This article is a trial to overview all these aspects of the parasite.
