Further evidence for detection of short-lived transient hypomanganate(V)
and manganate(VI) intermediates during oxidation of some sulfated
polysaccharides by alkaline permanganate using conventional
spectrophotometric techniques

Research Abstract

Spectrophotometric evidence for the formation of hypomanganate(V), [CAR-MnVO4
3], and manganate(
VI), [CAR-MnVIO4
2], intermediate complexes has been confirmed during the oxidation of iotaand
lambda-carrageenan-sulfated polysaccharides (CAR) by alkaline permanganate at pHs P12 using a
conventional spectrophotometer. These short-lived intermediate complexes were identified and characterized.
A reaction mechanism in good consistence with the experimental results is suggested.

Synthesis and characterization of MnPS3 for hydrogen sorption

Research Abstract

Single phase MnPS3 powder was prepared by solid state reaction between Mn. S and P carried out at 650 ˚C in evacuated silica tube. The structure, morphology and sorption characteristics of the prepared solid were investigated. The results revealed that the obtained MnPS3 compound was capable of adsorbing 3.5 wt% hydrogen at – 193 ˚C and a pressure of 30 bar. Little amount of hydrogen (0.07 wt %) was adsorbed at room temperature. The hydrogen adsorption/desorption cyclesat various temperatures did not result in irreversible chemical structural changes of the MnPS3 compound, but the microstructure after hydrogen cycling diminished and became finer.

Effect of diabetes control or growth hormone and somatomedin-C levels in young subjects with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

Research Abstract

serum levels of GH, Somatomedin-C as well as linear body growth were determined in 28 young diabetic subjects (14 children and 14 preadolescents) and in 20 normal age-matched control. All children and 50% of the preadolescent patients were poorly controlled. The mean hight in both groups was insignificantly lower than that in controls. Serum GH was higher in both groups while SM-C was insignificantly lower in children and insignificantly higher in preadolescents than that in the controls. An inverse correlation between GPP and SM-C in the poorly controlled preadolescent diabetics. These finding may suggest that the decreased linear growth results in poorly controlled diabetics from decreased serum SM-C. Meanwhile, the elevated GH levels may imply a state of GH resistance and may help to explain the inadequate diabetes control among this group patients.
