As part of the Presidential Initiatives for Early Cancer Detection, the faculty of Dentistry in collaboration with the South Egypt Cancer Institute and the Egyptian Ministry of Health held a medical convoy for early tumor detection for faculty staff and employees on Thursday 21, 2023 in the Faculty of Dentistry.
The Alumni Unit along with the Continuing Education Unit hosted a workshop entitled, “Essentials of Scientific Research” on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Thesis Defense Hall on the fifth floor, where several staff members attended the event. The workshop was delivered by Prof/ Ahmed Mohamed Abbas, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most widespread cancer which totalizes more than 90% of oral malignancies. Therefore, the conception of detaining or preventing the malignant transformation remains a viable target for future. Oxaliplatin is a third-generation platinum based chemotherapy cure that has value in the treatment against several forms of neoplasms. It forms intrastrand links between two adjoining DNA bases, hence disrupting its replication and transcription.
Aim of the study: The current work was carried out to report the oxaliplatin drug as a chemotherapeutic agent during DMBA-induced carcinoma in hamster buccal pouch, utilizing histopathology and flow cytometry analysis.
Material and methods: A total of 60 Syrian hamsters distributed as 2 animals examined for the normal pouch mucosa and 58 hamsters divided into; 6 experiments for Group I, their pouches were painted only with mineral oil. The remaining 52 animals for Group II, treated by DMBA mixed in a mineral oil. After 6 weeks, the hamsters separated into 2 subgroups; Group IIA, were persisted operated in DMBA. Group IIB, were employed to DMBA and injected with oxaliplatin.
Results: Oxaliplatin revealed effectiveness and tolerance in turn down the DMBA carcinogenesis procedure. Additionally, the chemotherapeutic results of oxaliplatin detected a significant reduction relation to the DNA aneuploidy and the S-phase fraction throughout the tumorigenic activity.
Conclusion: Oxaliplatin provided a proper strategy as a chemotherapeutic curing for control oral carcinogenesis process with a notable reduction of cancer incidence through reducing the nuclear proliferation activity and induction of cellular apoptosis.
ABSTRACT
Objectives: The aim of the present study is to evaluate CD44 expression to detect cancer stem cell activity along with analyzing the DNA ploidy, to predict the activity of oral carcinogenesis.
Materials and method: Forty formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues of oral lesions were used and divided equally into 4 groups; different premalignant white lesions, well, moderate, and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas. All specimens were immunostained using CD44 antibodies. Moreover, the same paraffin blocks for each case used to prove the differentiation in DNA ploidy between groups using flow cytometer.
Results: The CD44 immunoexpression showed a marked statistical significant difference between premalignant white lesions and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas. Flow cytometric analysis of DNA parameters between the tested groups revealed a powerful difference of DNA ploidy between the premalignant group and other malignant groups. The S-phase fraction showed significant difference between poorly differentiated OSCC and premalignant lesions with no effective differences between the malignant lesions.
Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest that the CD44 immunoexpression collaborates with the DNA content analysis presented a real indicator in prediction the behavior of oral premalignant and malignant lesions.
