Effect of educational program on knowledge and practices regarding occupational safety measures among photocopy and printing workers at Assiut University

Abstracts: Background: Photocopiers and printers release several toxic compounds when operating, posing a significant public-health issue since millions of workers worldwide might be affected. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of educational program on knowledge and practices regarding occupational safety measures. Subjects and Method: Quasi-experimental with one group pretest, posttest design was conducted, among 163 workers at central printing press, and all photocopy and printing offices at Assiut University Faculties. Data collected by face-to-face interviewing the photocopy and printing workers using a structured questionnaire. It included two tools. Tool I: Part One: personal and occupational data. Part two: Assessment of studied workers' knowledge about occupational hazards and subsequent health problems. Tool II: Hand washing & back stretching exercise observational checklist. Results: The study exposed that 89.6% of studied workers had poor knowledge scores about occupational hazards and safety measures in the pre-test, which improved to 44.2% of workers who had good knowledge scores in the post-test and 58.3% of them had fair knowledge scores in the follow-up test. Additionally, 94.5% of studied workers had unsatisfactory practice scores in the pre-test, which improved to 62.6% having satisfactory practice scores in the post-test and 49.7% having satisfactory practices scores in the follow-up test with a statistically significant p<0.001.  Conclusion: Implementation of educational program leading to an improvement of workers' knowledge and practices regarding occupational safety measures. Recommendation: Continuing educational program for the photocopy and printing workers to reduce occupational hazards.

Effect of Hybrid Nursing Guidance on Eating Patterns and Perception among Patients Post Gastric Sleeve

Research Abstract

Abstracts: Background: Post gastric sleeve surgery, the changes in gastrointestinal physiology result in altered absorption and nutrient deficiencies. These patients need specialized nursing guidance to prevent unnecessary gastrointestinal symptoms. Aim: The study aims to examine the effect of hybrid nursing guidance on eating patterns and perception among patients post gastric sleeve. Design: quasi experimental (per-posttest) research design. Sample: A convenient sample of Eighty adult male and female patients. The sample was divided into two groups (study group 50 patients) and (control group 30 patients) undergoing gastric sleeve surgery Setting: Department of plastic surgery, gastric sleeve surgery unit and obesity outpatient clinic at Assiut university hospital. Tools: The data were collected by using three tools: (1) An interview questionnaire sheet (2) three-factor eating questionnaire and (3) Body image perception questionnaire. Results: there was a statistically significant difference in knowledge scores between study and control groups between the pre and posttest after 6th months from the application of the hybrid nursing guidance, as well as patients' eating practice pattern wear enhanced significantly post application of the hybrid nursing guidance, also patients complications post gastric sleeve were improved, finally patient‘ perception was significantly higher comparing to pre application values with (p = 0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that implementation of hybrid nursing guidance contributed positively with the changes of the patients post gastric sleeve surgery regarding eating practice pattern, prevent unnecessary gastrointestinal complications, and higher perception comparing to pre application of the hybrid nursing discharge guidance. Recommendation: Nurses should apply these guidelines as hospital routine care in the study place, as it will help patients adapt to their situation and increase their wellbeing as the initial aim.

Occupational Hazards and Self-Reported Health Problems among Photocopy and Printing Workers at Assiut University, Egypt

Research Abstract

Abstracts: Background: Photocopy and printing workers have a great chance of exposure to polluting materials and various hazardous substances that are harmful to human health. Objective: This study aims to assess occupational hazards and self-reported health problems among photocopy and printing workers. Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 163 workers at central printing press, including printing and photocopies offices of faculties, Assiut University. Methods: A structured questionnaire was administered through face-to-face interviews by the researcher. All respondents were interviewed during the period from first of February to the first of July 2022. It comprised four main parts Part One: Demographic and occupational data. Part Two: Self-Reported health problems of study participants. Part Three: Workplace environment at photocopy and printing offices. Part four: Studied workers' knowledge about occupational hazards and their knowledge about health risks associated with each hazard. Results: The study revealed that 89.0% of studied workers were male, 39.9% of them were aged from 40-50 years. Alongside, 89.6% of studied workers had poor knowledge about occupational hazards and health risks of each hazards. The most frequent muscle-skeletal problem among studied workers was back pain 36.2%. Approximately 9.8% complained from vomiting. Regarding respiratory problems, shortness of breathing was reported by 25.8% of the participants. About 10.4% of studied workers suffered from visual impairment. Also, 22.7% of participants complained from skin irritation. Conclusion: The study concluded that poor knowledge about occupational hazards, so they at higher risk for different work-related health problems.

Occupational Health Hazards Prevalence, Knowledge, Attitude and Practice among Butchers at Assiut District and City

Research Abstract

Background: Workers in slaughterhouses engaging in unhygienic practices create conducive environments for zoonoses and meat contamination. Knowledge of hygiene practices and their determinants provides evidence for the design of targeted interventions. Aim: To assess occupational health hazards prevalence, knowledge, attitude and practice among butchers at Assiut District and City. Subjects and method; Study design: A community-based descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. Setting: Butchers’ shops in Assiut District and City. Sample: Included 350 people working in butcher profession: Study tools: Three tools were included in this study; Tool (I): A structured, interview sheet consisted of five sections; personal characteristics, work related data, work environment assessment, reported occupational health problems, and butchers' knowledge. Tool (II): Butchers' attitude regarding occupational health hazards. Tool (III): Butchers’ practice observational checklist. Results: It was found that 45.1% of butchers aged<40 years, 40.9% had secondary education, 45.7% had fair level of knowledge with significance relation with education, residence, and nature of work. Also, 78.9% of them had a positive attitude with positive links with education, residence and receiving training courses and 70.0% of them had satisfactory practices which affected with education, residence and work experience. Conclusion: Butchers had a fair level of knowledge, positive attitude and satisfactory level of practices regarding occupational hazards. Recommendations: Health education program regarding occupational safety and the importance of protective personal equipment should be encouraged

Mothers’ knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices towards their Children with Cerebral Palsy at Assiut City, Egypt

Abstract
Background: Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders caused by damage in the developing brain that affect the brain‟s ability to control movement and maintain posture and balance. Aim of the study: To assess mothers‟ knowledge, attitudes, and reported practices towards their children with cerebral palsy at Assiut city, Egypt. Setting: The study was carried out in Nour Al-Hayat center for rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy, Kian rehabilitation center and Comprehensive rehabilitation center. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used in this study. The total number of sample was 210 mothers. Tools of the study: Structured interviewing questionnaire was consisted of four tools for data collection. First tool included socioeconomic scale, characteristics of mothers and their children. Second tool: Mothers‟ knowledge about CP. Third tool: Mothers‟ attitude scale. Fourth tool: Mothers‟ reported practices. Results: One-third of mothers their ages were ≥ 35 years and two-fifths of them had secondary and intermediate institute education. 59.5% of mothers had poor knowledge, 40.5% had neutral attitude and 78.1% of them had unsatisfactory reported practices. Conclusion: There were statistical significant differences between mothers' mothers' socio-demographic characteristics and their total knowledge, attitudes and reported practices regarding care of their children with cerebral palsy. Also, there was positive correlation between knowledge and reported practices scores. Recommendation: Development of an educational and training program should be conducted for mothers to improve their knowledge and practices in caring for their children with CP.

The day included various lectures:

  • A lecture titled "Climate Change and Its Impact on the Health of the Elderly" presented by Professor. Atef El-Qarn, a Pulmonologist and President of the Chest Association in Assiut.
  • Dr. Nermeen Mahmoud, a Professor and Head of the Gerontology Nursing Department, delivered a lecture on "Health Changes with Aging and Their Impact on Climate Tolerance."
  • Dr. Hanan Abu Zeid, an Gerontology Nursing Professor, highlighted a lecture on "Dealing with Climate Change for the Elderly."

The event was attended by faculty members, their assistants from the Nursing Faculty, and a number of postgraduate students and fourth-year students.
