Effective and Elaborative Induction Program for Mitigating Myths and Misconceptions Linked to Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in a Resource Limited Setting

Research Abstract

Since the first transplant in 1957 and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the curative modality for numerous hematological disorders. Nevertheless, it is not available for all patients. Besides unavailability of matched donors a lot of factors could hinder HSCT in a resource limited setting, as financial and administrative factors. In our daily practice we noticed other factors that hinder HSCT in our center, the common myths and misconceptions about HSCT and donation. This quasi-experimental study assessed, for the first time, common myths and misconceptions about HSCT among 218 medical and nursing students before and after an interventional educational program. The study tool was an investigators' developed self-administered questionnaire. Participants' male to female ratio was 1:2.5, and FAS was middle in 52.7%. Knowledge and Attitude of Nurses Regarding Newborn Hearing Impairment and Screening at Health Centers and clinics in Assiut City

Abstract
Background: Hearing impairment is a partial or total inability to hear, may occur in one or both ears. In children hearing problems can affect the ability to learn spoken language and result in loneliness. Aim of the study: assess knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding Newborn Hearing Impairment and screening at Health Centers and clinics in Assiut City. Subjects and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional design was used. A Total coverage sample of 235 nurses has participated. Tool 1: A structured self-administered questionnaire, it included three parts, Part one: personal data, Part two: questions related to attending training course regarding newborn hearing screening, Part three: knowledge about Newborn Hearing Impairment (NHI) and screening. Tool 2: It included two scales, Part one: Attitude assessment scale about NHI, and Part two: Attitude assessment scale about Newborn Hearing Screening. Results: 34.5% of nurses had poor knowledge, and 69.4% of them had a positive attitude regarding NHI, while 68.9% had a negative attitude against newborn hearing screening. There is a statistically significant difference between the score of nurses’ knowledge and their age. Conclusion: Deficit in nurses’ knowledge regarding newborn hearing impairment and screening; and fluctuation in their attitude between negative and positive. Also, there were statistically significant differences between the level of nurses’ attitude about newborn hearing screening, their age, and years of experience. Recommendations: in-service training programs should be developed and implemented for nurses.

Abstract
Background: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most difficult non-communicable disorders to treat in children and is a global health issue. Diabetes self-care is particularly challenging for children. Aim: To assess self-care knowledge and practice among preparatory diabetic school students at Aswan City. Design: A descriptive cross sectional research. Study Setting: At preparatory governmental schools, in the Aswan City. Sample: convenience sample of 99 students diagnosed with diabetes from the previous study setting. Tools for data collection: Tool (I): Structured interviewing questionnaire include 2 parts: First part: demographic characteristics of students, demographic characteristics of parents, and diabetic history of students. Second part: Students‟ knowledge about diabetes. Tool (II): Cstsilkheh of self-care practice. Results: More than half of them had good knowledge about diabetes, while less than one third of them had fair knowledge and less than one fifth of them had a total poor of knowledge. This study also highlighted that nearly one fifth of the students had satisfactory self- care practice, while more than two fifths of them had unsatisfactory self-care practice. Conclusion: study confirmed that there was highly statistical considerable difference positive correlation between the overall knowledge and the overall practices. Recommendations: Programs for in-service education on diabetes management and emergency protocols for hypo- or hyperglycemia should be made available to school health nurses.

Abstract
Abstract Background: Premarital therapy often describes a procedure aimed to better premarital relations, resulting in stable marriages and greater satisfaction. Aims: To assess studied students' knowledge and attitude regarding premarital examination at Aswan University. Design: A descriptive cross sectional study. Setting: This study was conducted at four randomly selected faculties at Aswan University. Sample: A purposive sample of 310 of students at level fourth at Aswan University was recruited in this study. Tools: Two tools; Tool I: An self-administrated questionnaire sheet was involving two parts: part 1: Socio-demographics, part 2: Knowledge assessment questionnaire Tool II: Attitude Assessment Scale. Results: 47.1% of the students had poor knowledge level, while 22.6% of them had good knowledge level regarding pre-marital examination. Also, 61.3% of the students had positive attitude regarding pre-marital examination, while, 38.7% of them had negative attitude regarding premarital examination. Conclusion: there was significant correlation (P=0.028) between the total students' knowledge and total attitude regarding premarital examination Recommendations: Developing an educational program to raise awareness of students about premarital counseling in universities.

Knowledge and Practice of Restaurants’ Workers Regarding Occupational Health Hazards and Safety Measures at Assiut University Restaurants

Abstract
Background: Caregivers for elderly patients with cirrhosis face huge burdens, and they use multiple coping strategies to adapt to these burdens. Aim: To assess relations between caregivers knowledge, burden, and coping strategies toward elderly patients with liver cirrhosis. Design: A descriptive research design was used. Setting: This study was conducted in the Liver Diseases Departments (male & female) in Al-Rajhy Liver Hospital at Assiut University. Sample: A convenience sample of 400 caregivers of elderly patients with liver cirrhosis. Tools: Structured interview questionnaire, knowledge questionnaire, zarit burden scale, and coping strategies inventory short-form. Results: The findings revealed that 34.7 of the caregivers were in the age group 40 - < 50 years, 52.8% were males and 75.8% of them were sons or daughters. 69.5% of them had poor knowledge regarding liver cirrhosis, 48.3% had a severe burden, and they mostly used problem-focused engagement as a coping strategy with burden. There was a statistically significant relation between caregiver's knowledge and their burden level, there was statistically positive correlation between knowledge and problem-focused engagement, and a negative correlation with problem-focused disengagement and emotion-focused disengagement coping strategies. Conclusion: The caregiver's poor knowledge has a negative effect on their burden, and most of them use problem-focused engagement and problem-focused disengagement coping strategies. Recommendation: Conduct an education and training program for caregivers regarding the care of elderly patients with liver cirrhosis.
