Effectiveness of Structured Nursing Teaching Program on
Outcomes of Chronic Low Back Pain Patients Undergoing
Radiofrequency Ablation

Research Abstract
Background: Chronic low back pain is a full disorder that considers an important health problem. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on outcomes of chronic low back pain patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation. Methods: A quasi-experimental research design has been utilized. Setting: Anesthesia and pain management department at the main Assiut University Hospital. Sample: Sixty low back pain patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation. They were randomly assigned in two groups of 30 patients each. Tools: three tools were utilized: Tool I: Structured interview patients' questionnaire. Tool II: Visual analogue pain scale and Tool III: "Modified Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire" in addition, structured nursing teaching program. Results: More than half (53.3%) of the case group their age was from 18 to 55 years, and the rest of them (46.7%) were older adults aged 55 years and more. 80% of the case group had good knowledge post implementation of the program. (100%) of the case group had worst pain intensity level which decrease to (46.7%) post program. 40% of case group had sever disability, which decreased to 30% post implementation of the program. there were significant relation between pain analogue scale and Oswestry low back pain disability scale in pre and post structured nursing teaching program regarding to occupation Conclusion: Structured nursing teaching program had an effective strategy to improve the patients’ outcomes through increasing patients' knowledge, and decreasing both pain intensity and physical disability in the case group versus the control group. Recommendation: Supervised structured teaching program should be carried out for all patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation about pre-and post-procedure instructions and helpful hints for a healthy back when standing, walking, sitting, sleeping, and lifting. Keywords: Chronic low back pain, Radiofrequency ablation, structured nursing teaching program.

Effect of Nursing Protocol on Nurses' Performance and Venous Thromboembolism Risks Among the Patients with Cancer Undergoing Surgery

Research Abstract
Background: Nurses play an important role in identifying, preventing and caring of VTE among cancer surgery patients. Aim: To assess the effect of nursing protocol on nurses’ performance and venous thromboembolism risks among the patients with cancer undergoing surgery. Research design: A quasi-experimental (pre- posttest) research study on (30) nurses who working in surgical oncology department, at Assiut University Hospital, and (60) randomly selected patients with cancer undergoing surgery divided equally in to two groups (study and control). Tools: Three tools were utilized; A structured self-administered questionnaire, observational check list and VTE risk factors assessment scale. Results: The mean score of total nurses' knowledge and practice significantly increased after the intervention nursing protocol. There was a statistically significant difference between both groups regarding venous thromboembolism risks and half of the studied patients had intermediate risk of VTE while two thirds had high risks post application of the nursing protocol. Conclusion: The implementation of the nursing protocol had a significant improvement on nurse’s knowledge and practice in addition to a significantly diminishing of thromboembolism risks among study than control group. Recommendation: Regularly updating and refreshing the nurses’ knowledge and practice are recommended through workshops to minimize the risks of VTE among the patients with cancer undergoing surgery.

[CITATION] Effect of the educational nursing program on quality of life for patients with type II diabetes mellitus at Assiut University Hospital

Research Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus constantly changes a patient’s life. Patient’s self care, consisting of daily insulin injections or oral anti-diabetic agents, self monitoring of blood glucose and diabetic diet has an impact on QOL. The aim of the present study was to assess quality of life for patients with type II diabetes mellitus, to develop and implement an educational nursing program for patients with type II diabetes mellitus, to evaluate the effect of applying the educational nursing program on quality of life for patients with type II diabetes mellitus pre and after two months from application of educational program. Methods: The study was conducted in the internal medicine department, internal medicine and diabetes clinic at University Hospital (Assiut–Egypt). Sixty adult patients were divided randomly equally into two groups (study group and control group) thirty for each group. The following tools were utilized for data collection: first tool “Structured patient interview questionnaire sheet”; it included two parts (socio-demographic characteristic and medical data), second tool “World Health Organization Quality of life (WHOQOL-WHO) scale”.Results: In the control group 40% of diabetic patients had good quality of life score while in the study group 100% had good quality of life after application of the educational program. Conclusions: The results of the present study concluded that: according to the control group, there was no statistically significant difference pre and post program in all domains of quality of life scale. According to the study group there was a highly significant effect of educational program on promotion of quality of life in physical …

Nursing Errors Regarding Preparation and Administration of Intravenous Drugs

Research Abstract
Background: Intravenous (IV) medications pose particular risks because of their greater complexity and the multiple steps required in their preparation, administration and monitoring. The aim of this study was; assess the nursing errors during preparation and administration of intravenous drugs. Research design: Descriptive research design used in this study. Subjects: Non probability (convenience) sample was utilized, consisting of all nurses (30 nurses, 18 nurses in burn unit and 12 nurses in plastic surgery unit). Tools: Self-administered questionnaire sheet designed to assess nurses' knowledge in preparation and administration of intravenous drugs and direct Observational check list sheet designed to assess nurses' practice regarding the preparation and administration of IV drugs. Results: More than half of the studied nurses have good knowledge 53.3% regarding preparation of IV drugs, 50% regarding Administration of IV drugs, more than half of them have adequate practice 60% and there were significant relation between nurses' demographic data and their nursing practice regarding training needs (p=0.042). Conclusion: more than half of the studied nurses have good knowledge and adequate practice. Recommendations The nurses need to continue attending training courses, and increase number of nurses in the units
