Overweight and obesity prevalence among upper Egypt primary schools' children using Egyptian and CDC growth charts

Research Abstract
Background Monitoring of overweight and obesity among children; by using different growth charts; is fundamental to disease prevention and health promotion. Aim of the study To determine overweight and obesity for age among primary school children in Upper Egypt using the Egyptian and CDC growth charts. Subjects and methods Cross-sectional research design was used and conducted at 20 public primary schools in four Upper Egypt governorates. The sample size was 5300 children who selected by multistage sampling technique. Interview questionnaire included personal data and anthropometric measurements (height, Weight and BMI) and Egyptian and CDC growth charts. Results The percentages of children being overweight and obese for age using Egyptian chart were low compared to CDC charts (1.9 vs 4.6%, 8.5% vs. 3.3%, 8.7% vs 3.3% respectively). According to Egyptian chart 5.2% and 5% from total studied boys and girls were overweight and obese respectively, while in CDC growth chart 13.3% and 10.5% from total studied boys and girls respectively. Conclusion It concluded that there were remarkable differences between CDC and Egyptian growth charts references in the classification of child overweight and obesity. The CDC growth chart evident much higher prevalence among the studied children compared to the Egyptian growth chart. Recommendation Periodic development and reconstruction of national growth chart to represent the growth pattern of all geographical areas in Egypt. Also, further researches needed to assess the differences of both international and national references.

Effectiveness of Video- assisted Training on Insulin Self-Administration Level among
Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes

Research Abstract
Abstract: Insulin therapy is a cornerstone of treatment in type 1 diabetes among children with the right self-insulin administration. The use of video showing in pediatric training is considered a powerful and attractive technic. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of videoassisted training on insulin self-administration level among adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Quasi experimental research design was adopted. A study was carried out with 40 children from Children University Hospital. A structured interview schedule and observational checklist on selfadministration of insulin were used to collect the data. Children were trained after the pre-test by video demonstration method and post-test was implemented during the first dose of insulin injection after eight days of training. The study found that more than half (67.5%) of the sample was males with mean age of 14±1.70 years. Only 15% of cases were have adequate total knowledge pre-video intervention, compared to about three quarters (72.5%) of them were have adequate total knowledge post-video intervention and about one quarter (22.5%) of cases were have adequate total practice pre-video intervention, and the majority of cases (85.5) were have adequate total practice post-video intervention. Thus, the video-assisted teaching regarding insulin injection regarding self-administration of insulin for diabetic adolescent was effective in enhancing and improving the Knowledge and practice skills among diabetic adolescent.

ASSESSMENT OF NURSES’ KNOWLEDGE ABOUT
ACCIDENTS’ PREVENTION AMONG THE ELDERLY IN
ASSIUT GOVERNORATE

Research Abstract
ABSTRACT : The study was conducted in 5 different setting in Assiut Governorate: Assiut University Hospitals; Health Insurance Hospital (Elmabarra); Assiut General Hospital (Elshamla); District hospitals (Dirout and Abnob Hospital); Rural Hospitals (Dronka and Banimohamadiat Hospitals). 30%of the total number of each of the previous setting was taken. The total number of the sample was 500 nurses. A written structured interview questionnaire was designed for this study. The data collection period extended for eight months from August 1998 to March1999. Only one nurse has been interviewed at a time using the study questionnaire. Each single interview took about 25 minutes. The aim of the present study is to assess the nurses’ knowledge about accidents among the elderly, causes, types, complications, prevention, and the nursing role in accidents’ prevention. The study showed (50%)of the sample stated that the road accident is the most common type, followed by falls (40.2%), almost half of the sample (51.4%) stated that arthritis is one of the main diseases contributing falls in the elderly. Around one third of the sample (31.4%) stated that caring for the elderly’ medications while (5.4%) suggested attending training program for personnel working with the elderly are items of roles in accidents’ prevention. The study recommended that Teaching curriculum should be contain more information about the elderly and their problems in all levels of education i.e., schools and university, to develop, plan, and implement educational programs related to accidents’ prevention among the elderly for nurses and other personnel working with this sector, health education should be given through mass media regarding the first aid, especially during accident occurrence among the elderly.
