Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy Launches Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign at Assiut International Technological University under the Slogan: “Say No to Drugs… An Aware Generation… A Safe Future”

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University and Supervisor of Assiut International Technological University, inaugurated today, Monday, December 15, the youth awareness campaign on the dangers of drug abuse. The campaign, organized by the Center for Monitoring and Studying Community Issues under the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector, is held in cooperation with Assiut International Technological University under the slogan: “Say No to Drugs… An Aware Generation… A Safe Future.”

The campaign is conducted under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Professor Ahmed Saad, Dean of the German Technological College in Assiut, and Dr. Amr Osman, Director of the National Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction. Organizational support is provided by Professor Ali Kamal Ma’bad, Director of the Center for Monitoring and Studying Community Issues, and Dr. Asmaa Gaber Mehran, Deputy Director of the Center.

The inauguration was attended by Dr. Ibrahim Askar, Director of Preventive Programs at the National Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction, Professor Rehab El-Dakhly, Media Advisor to the President of Assiut University, Professor Ahmed Hussein Mansour, Preacher and Member of the Fatwa Committee in Assiut, and Father Philobatir Michel, Assiut Diocese, alongside faculty members and students of the International Technological University, and volunteers from the National Fund.

In his opening remarks, Professor El-Minshawy expressed his pleasure in launching the campaign, emphasizing its critical message at a sensitive time. He noted that the campaign aims to raise awareness among youth and strengthen their sense of responsibility toward themselves and their country, helping to protect them from the dangers of addiction.

Professor El-Minshawy added that the campaign seeks to provide scientific, practical, and relatable awareness about the risks of drug use, including newly emerging substances, while offering a platform for open dialogue and responsible discussion.

Addressing the students of the International Technological University, Professor El-Minshawy highlighted their role as a model for modern, skill-based higher education, closely linked to national development and the needs of the labor market. He stressed that the state, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, relies on these graduates as skilled professionals capable of supporting the national economy and contributing to the building of the “New Republic.”

He emphasized that safeguarding students’ physical and mental health and protecting their minds from risks—primarily drug addiction—is a national responsibility. He explained that drugs not only harm the body but also impair focus, diminish creativity, and jeopardize future careers, particularly in technology-driven fields that require full awareness, precision, and discipline.

Professor El-Minshawy affirmed that the University’s role extends beyond academic education to include developing well-rounded individuals who can make sound decisions, reject negative behaviors, and face challenges with knowledge, discipline, and action. He concluded by urging students to be role models, protect their minds and future, and adopt the campaign’s message:

Say No to Drugs… Yes to Life, Yes to Knowledge, Yes to a Future that Befits You and Egypt.”

Professor Mohamed Adawy highlighted that combating drugs is a matter of national security, directly impacting the country’s development. He stressed that demand-reduction policies are among the most effective tools in preventing drug abuse and noted that peer influence often serves as the gateway to addiction, making awareness-raising essential for youth protection.

He praised the collaboration with the National Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction, headed by Dr. Amr Osman and Dr. Ibrahim Askar, emphasizing that combining efforts across institutions is crucial to protect youth. He underscored that adherence to religious teachings and ethical values is a key pillar in preventing drug abuse and building an aware generation capable of protecting itself and contributing to national development.

Professor Ahmed Saad extended his gratitude to Professor El-Minshawy for supporting the campaign, emphasizing its role in enhancing youth awareness about addiction and the University’s commitment to its community responsibilities.

Professor Ali Kamal Ma’bad noted that the campaign represents a serious step toward sustainable youth awareness and community protection, aiming to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge of the risks associated with drug use, particularly synthetic drugs such as GHB, and their social, health, and economic impacts. The campaign also clarifies religious perspectives on drug use.

The National Fund actively supports the campaign through diverse awareness activities, providing accurate knowledge to youth and offering treatment and rehabilitation services to those in need, thereby strengthening prevention and fostering a sustainable culture of awareness.

The inauguration program included two main sessions:

“Risks of Youth Use of Synthetic Drugs (GHB) and Key Health, Economic, and Social Impacts” – presented by Dr. Laila Atef Ali, Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy.

“Religious Perspectives on Drug Use” – a moderated open discussion by Professor Ahmed Hussein Mansour, Preacher and Fatwa Committee Member in Assiut, and Father Philobatir Michel, Assiut Diocese.

 

Faculty of Education at Assiut University Launches “Tobacco-Free Generation” Initiative to Promote Health Awareness and Combat Smoking Risks

Under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the Faculty of Education launched the “Tobacco-Free Generation” initiative today, Sunday, December 14. The initiative is supervised by Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Professor Hassan Hweil, Dean of the Faculty of Education, and Professor Amani Sherif, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development.

The initiative featured an awareness lecture delivered by Professor Ahmed Shaddad, Professor of Chest Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, Assiut University, and Supervisor of the Smoking Cessation Unit at the Main University Hospital. The lecture was attended by faculty members, teaching assistants, staff, and students.

Professor Ahmed Al-Minshawy emphasized the University’s commitment to students’ health, describing them as a national asset and the driving force of future development. He highlighted the University’s role in promoting health awareness, countering harmful behaviors that threaten youth well-being, and providing a safe and healthy educational environment that encourages positive lifestyle habits. He affirmed the University’s continued support for awareness initiatives that serve both public health and the community.

Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy underscored the importance of addressing smoking due to its severe risks to individuals and society, noting that smoking is a primary gateway to addiction. He commended the Faculty of Education for launching the initiative, which aims to educate students and promote a tobacco-free university environment.

Professor Hassan Hweil explained that the initiative reflects Assiut University’s commitment to enlightening youth about the dangers of harmful habits and behaviors that negatively affect health, productivity, and community contribution. He noted that the Egyptian government places high importance on the education and health sectors as fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable development.

Professor Amani Sherif emphasized that the “Tobacco-Free Generation” initiative aligns with the vision of the University and the Faculty in promoting health awareness and supporting national efforts to protect youth from harmful practices. She affirmed that building human capital begins with instilling positive behaviors and that student protection is a shared responsibility of both the University and society.

During his lecture, Professor Ahmed Shaddad discussed the direct and indirect health, psychological, and social impacts of smoking, its negative influence on youth, and the role of the University and community in combating this phenomenon. He highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of smoking cessation and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices within and beyond the university community.

The initiative concluded with the distribution of educational posters promoting smoking prevention and the adoption of healthy behaviors, contributing to a clean university environment and supporting sustainable health for future generations.

Community Service and Environmental Development Sector Reviews Performance Gaps in Its Second Meeting According to the 2024/2025 Executive Plan

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy emphasized that conducting a self-assessment of the performance of work teams in implementing the sector’s activities, according to Assiut University’s Strategic Plan (2024–2029), constitutes a primary objective and a top priority for achieving the strategic goals of the University.

Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, held a meeting with the team responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Executive Plan for the sector. He highlighted that this meeting is critical for evaluating the first year of implementation and correcting the course to ensure the strategic objectives for the remaining years (2024–2029) are fully achieved.

Professor Omar Saeed, Committee Coordinator, presented the results of the first-year review, including a summary of successfully implemented activities and their outcomes on the ground.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were also reviewed. The presentation indicated that certain objectives, such as (e.g., environmental awareness campaigns), exceeded their targeted indicators, while other indicators, such as (e.g., partnerships with civil society organizations), required intervention.

The committee, attended by Professor Khaled Fathy, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computers and Information, Professor Heba Atiya Yassi, Vice Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology for Community Service and Environmental Development, Professor Mohamed Abu Rehab, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts for Graduate Studies, and Professor Mohamed Mustafa Hamd from the Faculty of Education, discussed in detail the main causes of performance gaps, which were summarized as (e.g., lack of coordination between departments, delays in budget allocation, or changes in the operational environment).

Based on the discussion, the committee moved forward with developing an immediate corrective action plan to address these causes and ensure the sector stays on track to meet its strategic objectives.

 

Assiut University to Host Fourth Roundtable on Labor Market Needs in Agriculture and Veterinary Sectors on

Under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, the University will host the Fourth Roundtable organized by the University Center for Career Development, titled “Agriculture and Veterinary: Labor Market Needs in the Agricultural and Veterinary Sectors.” This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to aligning education with labor market requirements and enhancing training and employment opportunities for its students and graduates.

The roundtable will be held under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Professor Mohamed Suleiman Moselhy, Director of the University Center for Career Development.

The event aims to foster constructive dialogue between the University and various professional institutions, discussing the practical and technical skills required from new graduates, as well as exploring mechanisms for joint collaboration in vocational training and professional development. This approach contributes to preparing qualified professionals capable of meeting labor market demands and keeping pace with modern developments in the agricultural and veterinary sectors.

In this context, the University Center for Career Development at Assiut University plays a pivotal role in supporting national efforts to enhance higher education, improve the employability of graduates from public universities, and facilitate students’ transition to the workforce, in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.

The Career Development Center was established at Assiut University and inaugurated by Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University. The Center serves as a platform to support students and graduates in defining their career paths by providing specialized training programs that help them understand the requirements of the Egyptian labor market and build effective connections with both the public and private sectors.

Professor El-Minshawy Opens “Sustainable Environmental Recycling” Exhibition as Part of the First Scientific Forum for Green Sustainable Environmental Projects at Assiut University

Assiut University witnessed today, Wednesday, 10 December, the launch of the First Scientific Forum on “Green Sustainable Environmental Projects,” held under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, and under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development and Chair of the Forum. The event was also organized with the participation of Professor Mohamed Mostafa Hamad, Secretary-General of the Forum; Professor Saleh Ismail, Forum Coordinator; and Ms. Riham El-Hefnawy, Forum Liaison Officer, alongside participation from faculties across the university.

 Professor El-Minshawy emphasized that the forum provided an important scientific platform that reinforced Assiut University’s research role in supporting international efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that the forum’s activities addressed the latest scientific trends in environmental and public health fields while offering practical solutions to environmental challenges, including food security, climate change, sustainable resource management, green economy, biotechnology, and innovations promoting human health.

Professor Mohamed Adawy highlighted that the forum’s objectives and themes were directly aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. He stressed the university’s commitment to advancing environmental research and projects from concept to practical application, thereby enhancing its role in serving the community and addressing environmental challenges.

The Vice President added that the forum program included two scientific sessions: the first focused on presenting and discussing smart green environmental projects, while the second covered green entrepreneurship initiatives. He noted that both sessions provided a platform to introduce innovative resource management models and solutions, in addition to encouraging youth and researchers to develop initiatives supporting the green economy and Egypt’s vision for a sustainable future.

Professor Mohamed Mostafa Hamad emphasized that hosting the forum was the culmination of Assiut University’s efforts to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment, fostering conditions conducive to life, work, and growth without harming natural resources. He stressed that the forum reinforced the university’s role across various development domains by integrating its educational and research plans with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

During the opening session, Professor Saleh Ismail highlighted the university’s commitment to linking scientific research with practical applications, ensuring that research outputs translate into implementable solutions serving the community. He also emphasized the university’s focus on supporting students’ ideas and proposals across sustainable development areas, addressing environmental challenges in Upper Egypt.

The opening session included the presentation of the Forum Shield to Prof. Mohamed Ahmed Adawi, the forum organizers, session chairs, and sponsoring companies.

Professor El-Minshawy: The exhibition showcases innovative models supporting environmental, food, and industrial sustainability while promoting a culture of recycling and innovation among students.

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, inaugurated today, Wednesday, 10 December, the “Sustainable Environmental Recycling” exhibition, held as part of the “First Scientific Forum: Green Sustainable Environmental Projects.” The event was organized under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs and Chair of the Forum.

The inauguration was attended by Professor Gamal Badr, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research; Professor Mohamed Mostafa Hamad, Secretary-General of the Forum; Professor Saleh Ismail, Forum Coordinator; and Ms. Riham El-Hefnawy, Forum Liaison Officer.

The exhibition was organized under the guidance of Professor Mohamed Abdel-Baset, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Specific Education for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Dr. Rehab Ahmed Zaki, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art Education, Faculty of Specific Education.

The exhibition featured over 300 projects and products across environmental, food, industrial, and artistic recycling and innovation fields, reflecting the efforts of the university’s faculties in promoting sustainability and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on campus.

During his tour of the exhibition, Professor El-Minshawy praised the innovative environmental and sustainable projects on display, emphasizing that the students’ work serves as a practical model for raising awareness of the importance of conserving natural resources, reducing environmental impact, promoting innovation, and encouraging small-scale environmentally conscious projects. He also highlighted the opportunities such initiatives create for collaboration between the university, industry, and the local community, equipping students with practical skills to apply sustainability concepts in daily life and future projects.

Professor Mohamed Adawy noted that participating faculties included the Faculty of Early Childhood Education, the Faculty of Specific Education, the Faculty of Computers and Information, the Faculty of Sugar Industry Technology and Integrated Industries, and the Faculty of Agriculture. Each faculty presented a distinguished set of projects, including marketable products, artworks, handicrafts, and food items, reflecting the unique identity of each faculty and its areas of innovation, while promoting a culture of sustainability and creativity among students.

In recognition of his continuous support for environmental initiatives at the university, Professor Mohamed Adawy presented the Forum Shield of the “First Scientific Forum: Green Sustainable Environmental Projects” to Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy.

Faculty of Medicine at Assiut University Holds the 8th Community Environmental Day on “Health and Social Risks of Sports Doping”

Under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the Faculty of Medicine organized the 8th Community Environmental Day under the theme “Health and Social Risks of Sports Doping”. The event was held under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs; Professor Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chair of the University Hospitals Board; Professor Hoda Makhlouf, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs; and Dr. Medhat El-Arabi, Professor of Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine and coordinator of the day’s activities.

The event saw the participation of Professor Mohamed Abdel Rahman, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs; Professor Khaled Abdel Aziz, Director of the Main University Hospital; as well as a number of faculty members, teaching assistants from the Faculties of Medicine and Sports Sciences, and other staff members.

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy highlighted the University’s commitment to health awareness as a core component of building individuals and society. He emphasized that the use of sports doping represents a real threat to youth if not accompanied by proper medical awareness and health education. He added that the activities of the Environmental Day aim to shed light on the health and social risks of sports doping while promoting a culture of responsibility and awareness among young people.

Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy noted that addressing the phenomenon of sports doping requires a coordinated effort among educational, medical, and media institutions to protect youth and promote healthy lifestyle practices. He emphasized that the University seeks through this Environmental Day to educate students about the risks and ethical implications of doping, encouraging safe and responsible athletic practices that contribute to the development of a strong and aware generation.

Professor Alaa Attia stated that sports are a cornerstone of public health, yet the misuse of sports doping transforms them into a serious threat to individual health. He highlighted the growing prevalence of doping among youth and its severe health consequences, including kidney and liver failure, as well as hormonal and psychological disorders.

Professor Mohamed Abdel Rahman pointed out that sports doping has become one of the most dangerous threats to youth health, especially with the widespread promotion of products on social media under misleading labels such as “performance enhancement” or “muscle building,” without warning of potential health risks.

Professor Hoda Makhlouf emphasized that organizing the Environmental Day is part of the Faculty of Medicine’s community role, aiming to raise awareness among youth about the medical and ethical risks associated with unsupervised use of doping and dietary supplements. She stressed the importance of delivering awareness messages both inside and outside the University.

Professor Khaled Abdel Aziz highlighted the ongoing collaboration between University Hospitals and the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the Faculty of Medicine to support health awareness initiatives. He noted that the dangers of doping are not limited to athletes but also affect non-athletes due to their severe health implications.

Professor Medhat El-Arabi outlined that the Environmental Day included several specialized scientific lectures. These comprised a lecture on the key health risks of hormones and sports doping for individuals and society, a session on “Drug and Doping Analysis at Assiut University Hospitals: Positive or Negative Results” presented by Professor Hanan Said Farghly, Head of the Pharmacology Department at the Faculty of Medicine, and a lecture on “Doping and Supplements: Effects on Performance and Ethical Risks for Individuals and Society” delivered by Dr. Emad Shaaban, Professor at the Faculty of Sports Sciences. Additional lectures included “Dietary Supplements in Sports: Between Fact and Fiction” by Dr. Doaa Mohamed Abdel Rahman, Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine and Clinical Toxicology, and “Common Dietary Supplements and Sports Doping Substances in the Egyptian Market” by Dr. Ali Nour, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

Faculty of Early Childhood Education at Assiut University Organizes a Seminar on “Data Protection in the Digital Age: Awareness, Law, and Security” in Cooperation with the National Council for Women – Assiut Branch

Under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, the Faculty of Early Childhood Education organized a seminar entitled “Data Protection in the Digital Age: Awareness, Law, and Security” on Tuesday, December 9, in cooperation with the National Council for Women – Assiut Branch.

The seminar was held under the supervision and attendance of Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President of Assiut University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs; Professor Reham El-Meligy, Dean of the Faculty; and Dr. Lamyaa Kedwany, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Marwa Kedwany, Rapporteur of the National Council for Women in Assiut, and Ms. Islam Atef, Lawyer at the Complaints Office of the National Council for Women in Assiut.

The event was attended by Dr. Manal Anwar, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Graduate Studies and Research, along with department heads, faculty members, teaching assistants from various faculties, and a large number of students.

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy affirmed the University’s commitment to its societal role in addressing the challenges of the digital age, noting that data protection has become an essential component of the culture of awareness that the University seeks to instill among its students and affiliates. He added that cooperation with the National Council for Women in Assiut comes within the framework of unifying efforts to promote safe digital knowledge and provide students with the legal and behavioral awareness necessary for responsible interaction with modern technology.

Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy emphasized that Assiut University places increasing importance on spreading digital awareness in light of the rapid global developments in information technology. He noted that maintaining safety in the digital space has become an urgent necessity in both personal life and the workplace, adding that adopting safe digital practices—such as securing devices, regularly updating passwords, and responding appropriately to cyber threats—contributes to building a more aware and secure digital society.

For her part, Dr. Reham El-Meligy stated that the seminar falls within the University’s and the Faculty’s efforts to enhance digital awareness and protect personal data, particularly in light of the growing risks facing young people, especially female students, in the digital environment. She also warned against online fraud and electronic scams, advising students to safeguard their personal data and images and to seek support from competent authorities if exposed to any form of cyber extortion.

Dr. Lamyaa Kedwany stressed the importance of the seminar in raising awareness among University members about best practices for data protection and privacy preservation, particularly with the widespread digital transformation across Egyptian universities and various aspects of daily life.

During her presentation, Dr. Marwa Kedwany reviewed the roles and activities of the National Council for Women in Assiut and its efforts to raise awareness among students regarding internet risks and personal data protection. She explained that the Council is a governmental body dedicated to promoting and empowering women’s rights economically, politically, and socially, and that it regularly organizes workshops and awareness programs to educate girls and women on digital privacy, electronic fraud methods, and how to deal with cyber blackmail or digital threats.

Ms. Islam Atef addressed the issue of cyber violence, defining it as aggressive behavior directed by an individual against a person or group through the use of technology. She outlined the causes behind the spread of cyber violence and its various forms, including blackmail, threats, defamation, and cyberstalking—forms that particularly affect female university students and women in general. She also discussed Law No. 175 of 2018 on Combating Information Technology Crimes, highlighting ways to avoid cyber violence, methods for securing personal accounts, and the role of the family and society in reducing the misuse of technology.

Assiut University’s Community Service and Environmental Development Sector Reviews Its Executive Plan for the 2024/2025 Academic Year

The Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at Assiut University held its first meeting to review the sector’s executive plan for the 2024/2025 academic year, within the framework of the University’s Strategic Plan (2024–2029).

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, emphasized that strategic plans play a vital and fundamental role in guiding the work of the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector. He noted that these plans are directly linked to achieving Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, underscoring the importance of systematic planning and continuous evaluation.

Professor Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President of Assiut University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, met with members of the executive plan follow-up team and stressed the necessity of identifying the gap between what has already been implemented and what was originally planned within the executive plan. He also highlighted the critical importance of evaluating the first year of the strategic plan to ensure proper alignment and progress during the remaining years.

During the meeting, Dr. Omar Saeed, Committee Coordinator, reviewed the objectives and overarching goals of the executive plan derived from the University’s Strategic Plan (2024–2029). He emphasized the need to ensure full alignment between operational activities and the sector’s broader strategic objectives. It was affirmed that the primary goal at this stage is to develop an immediate and comprehensive action plan to review completed activities and verify the actual achievement of the targeted strategic goals during the first year of implementation.

The committee also discussed, in the presence of Professor Khaled Fathy, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computers and Information for Education and Student Affairs; Dr. Mohamed Mostafa Hamad, Professor at the Faculty of Education; and Dr. Mostafa Qayed, Lecturer at the Faculty of Commerce, the urgent need for accurate quantitative data and clearly defined performance indicators to assess success across the axes of environmental development, community partnership, and institutional responsibility.

The meeting further emphasized that the review process must include identifying the causes of any delays or deviations from the planned course, as well as developing proactive solutions to address them.

Committee Recommendations:

  • Submission of Detailed Progress Reports: Requiring all concerned departments and units to submit concise, data-supported progress reports outlining what has been achieved for each objective during the first year.
  • Identification of Performance Gaps: Summarizing and analyzing submitted reports to clearly identify objectives that have not reached the required completion rates.
  • Reprioritization of Activities: Compiling a list of the most critical uncompleted activities from the first year and incorporating them as top priorities in upcoming quarterly action plans to ensure overall strategic progress.
  • Monthly Follow-Up Meetings: Recommending the convening of fixed monthly meetings for the committee over the next three months, instead of seasonal meetings, to closely monitor corrective action plans and swiftly address performance gaps.
  • Enhancing Internal Communication: Emphasizing the activation of effective communication mechanisms among implementation entities to ensure continuous coordination and prevent duplication of efforts or information gaps.

Assiut University Holds Community Consultation Session to Assess Environmental Impact of New Hazardous Medical Waste Incineration Complex at University Hospitals

Assiut University held today a community consultation session for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the new hazardous medical waste incineration complex at its University Hospitals in the Western Desert hinterland. The session was held under the auspices of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, with the participation of Professor Mohamed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and under the supervision of Professor Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of University Hospitals.

The session was attended by Dr. Shehata El-Daba, Engineering Advisor to the University President; Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud, Environmental Supervisor at the University Hospitals; directors of university hospitals; deans of faculties; officials from the Ministry of Health, the Environmental Affairs Agency, and the Directorate of Health Affairs; as well as specialists from the General Administration of Solid Waste in Assiut Governorate, Occupational Health and Safety departments at university hospitals, and other relevant stakeholders.

Professor El-Minshawy emphasized the university’s commitment to enhancing the role of Assiut University Hospitals in providing advanced medical and therapeutic services to the residents of Upper Egypt. He highlighted that the hospitals represent an extension of the university’s mission in community service and adhere to the highest standards of occupational safety and health to protect patients, staff, and the broader community.

The university president stressed the importance of the environmental dimension in hospital operations, noting the ongoing efforts to develop medical waste management systems that safeguard the environment and minimize health risks. He underscored that such initiatives align with international standards and Egypt’s Vision 2030 for environmental and public health sustainability.

Professor El-Minshawy also highlighted the pivotal role of the university hospitals in building the capacities of medical and therapeutic staff through continuous training and education, while providing a safe and sustainable work environment, reflecting the university’s social responsibility toward local and regional communities and ensuring comprehensive, high-quality medical services.

Professor Mohamed Adawy underlined the session’s importance from environmental, societal, ethical, and security perspectives. He explained that community consultation sessions provide genuine opportunities for dialogue and exchange of perspectives among all stakeholders, serving as a fundamental step in establishing sound waste management policies and promoting environmental sustainability. He added that the world is witnessing a significant shift toward environmental awareness, which Assiut University is committed to embracing through projects that comply with international standards and support sustainable development goals.

Professor Adawy also emphasized the university’s dedication to fulfilling its environmental and social responsibilities, praising the central role of Assiut University Hospitals in delivering advanced medical services to Upper Egypt and the need to enhance medical waste management systems to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and the community.

Professor Alaa Attia stated that the consultation session represents an important milestone for collaborative work among various stakeholders. He noted that the project aims to achieve the safe disposal of medical waste while generating positive environmental outcomes for community health. He highlighted that the university hospitals, with over 4,000 beds, produce a substantial volume of medical waste, and the new facilities respond to this need while complementing the existing waste management system, reinforcing the university’s efforts to protect the environment and safeguard public health.

The session also included discussions on potential environmental impacts during both the construction and operational phases of the project. The EIA study provided a comprehensive description of the proposed site, including its geographic location, climate, agriculture, population, industry, and the legal and regulatory framework. It evaluated expected environmental impacts such as noise, air and water quality, soil and groundwater effects, visual impact, occupational health and safety, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, and traffic impacts during construction.

Additionally, the session reviewed potential environmental, social, and economic benefits of the project, alongside an overview of the incinerators to be installed at the new complex.

At the conclusion of the session, participants emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among all stakeholders to ensure the implementation of environmental protection measures, achieve a balance between development and environmental preservation, and comply with standards to safeguard public health and sustain environmental resources.
