Ideological Strategies in Barack Obama’s Cairo Speech: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Research Abstract
This discourse analytical study attempts to explore the ideological strategies employed by Barack Obama in his Cairo speech. It applies Van Dijk’s (2006) model to the analysis of political discourse in that speech to uncover the ideologies hidden in it. The article is divided into five sections. The first section offers a theoretical background on critical discourse analysis. Section (2) introduces the approach that will be applied. Section (3) displays the study aim and technique. Section (4) applies the ideological framework to the chosen speech. The last section summarizes the main findings of the study. The study reveals that Obama uses a wide range of strategies and techniques in his speech to achieve his political objectives. These strategies unconsciously reflect his ideological agenda. He adopts two major ideological strategies: positive self-presentation and negative other-presentation. The study explains the discursive tactics which he employs to create that ideological polarization represented in ‘Us’ vs. ‘Them.’

An Extended Systemic Cohesive Approach to the Analysis of Cohesion in the Quranic Text

Research Abstract
This text-linguistic study aims at analyzing the lexicogrammatical, semantic and semiotic cohesion in one of the Quranic chapters, namely /?an-naba?/ 'the news'. It applies Jin Soon Cha's (1985) Extended Systemic Cohesive Model to the analysis of cohesion in that Quranic chapter to see how far that model is helpful in explaining cohesion in the Holy Quran. Section (1) introduces the cohesive model that will be applied. Section (2) applies the lexicogrammatical, semantic and semiotic components of the model to the selected chapter. Section (3) summarizes the main findings of the study.

Syntactic Classes of the Arabic Active Participle and Their Equivalents in Translation: A Comparative Study in Two English Quranic Translations

Research Abstract
This study attempts to provide an analysis of the syntactic classes of Arabic active participle forms and discuss their translations based on a comparative study of two English Quranic translations by Yusuf Ali (1934) and Pickthall (1930). It starts with a brief introduction to the active participle in Arabic and the Arab grammarians' opinions on its syntactic classes. Then it explains the study aim and technique. The third section presents an analysis of the results of the study by discussing the various renderings of the Arabic active participle classes in the two target texts. A corpus of 300 sentences has been randomly selected from the source text, together with their translations in the target texts. The two translations of all the sentences are compared and analyzed in terms of syntactic and semantic features. The various English translations of the Arabic active participle are presented with a count of the examples representing them in the corpus and their percentages. Then, the contextual reference of each translation is studied and accounted for.

Genitive Constructions in English and Arabic: A Contrastive Study

Research Abstract
This paper offers a contrastive analysis of the genitive constructions in English and Standard Arabic. It aims at showing the similarities and differences between the two languages in such constructions from the morphological, syntactic and semantic perspectives. It starts with a definition of the term genitive and the various parts in a genitive construction. Then, a brief discussion of the traditional classification of genitive constructions is provided. After that, genitive constructions are dealt with from a morphological perspective. Furthermore, the syntactic structure of genitive phrases is contrasted in both languages. In addition, a semantic classification of genitive constructions in both languages will be provided. Finally, a summary of the convergences and divergences of genitive constructions in the two languages is given in the conclusion.
