Under the auspices of Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, University President, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Mawla, Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, Dr. Magdy Alwan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Dr. Mohamed Abu Rehab, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Education and Student Affairs.
Today marked the launch of the first day of the specialized training workshop on surveying, mapping, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) organized by the Faculty of Arts at Assiut University. The workshop is held at the faculty for first-year students of the program, as part of supporting practical aspects and developing basic skills among students, within a series of initiatives aimed at empowering students and enhancing their skills in modern applied fields.
This workshop is supervised by the program's executive committee, as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at preparing students to be academically and practically qualified to meet the demands of the labor market.
The workshop witnessed a distinctive hands-on training on the fundamentals of surveying work, and familiarization with surveying instruments and terminologies, amidst great interaction and enthusiasm from the students, reflecting the program's dedication to combining academic and practical aspects.
For his part, Dr. Magdy Alwan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, expressed the importance of this workshop, emphasizing that "introducing modern technological tools such as Geographic Information Systems into applied curricula is a pivotal step in preparing graduates capable of competing in the job market, especially in the fields of environmental planning, local development, and urban studies."
On another note, Dr. Khaled Badra, the program coordinator, explained that the first day focused on the basic theoretical and practical aspects, paving the way for participants to engage in hands-on experiences in the coming days, including the use of GIS programs such as *ArcGIS* and *QGIS* to create digital maps and analyze real spatial data.
It is worth mentioning that this workshop is part of the Faculty of Arts' plan to enhance digital education and integrate technology into the humanities, based on its belief that modern geography is not only a descriptive science but also an effective planning and analytical tool in the era of data.
