لكل شعب موسيقاه ولكل موسيقى طابعها الخاص المتميز المستمد من حضارة شعبها والموسيقى العربية المصرية لها سماتها الخاصة والمقام من أبرز هذه السمات. وإن مصطلح مقام هو كلمة عربية تعني مكان، أو حالة، أو شكل، أو هيئة.
وتُعد مقامات الموسيقى العربية ذات أهمية كبرى بشكل عام للعازفين وخاصةً للأكاديميين حيث تُستخدم في مناهج متعددة من مقررات الموسيقى العربية مثل مقرر (قواعد الموسيقى العربية - آلة التخصص – غناء عربي – أداء آلي وغنائي – صولفيج عربي – تذوق الموسيقى العربية) فتكمن أهمية دراسة ومعرفة تكوين المقام من أجناس وأبعاد ويُعد خطوة مهمة بالنسبة لكثير من دارسي الموسيقى والطالب المتخصص.
ويتطلب بعد دراسة المقامات معرفة تصويرها وكيفية تصوير كل مقام على حدا، حيث يتعلم الطالب خلال فترة دراسته طرق التصوير الخاصة بكل مقام، والتصوير هنا يعني نقل الدرجات النغمية للمقام إلى درجة أعلى أو أقل مع مراعاة الحفاظ على أبعاده التي تميز كل مقام عن الأخر مع وضع علامات التحويل المناسبة.
ومن هذا المنطلق ابتكر الباحث مسطرة لتصوير مقامات الموسيقى العربية التي يمكن للطلاب استخدامها في تصوير المقامات بصورة سريعة وبسيطة.
