Effectiveness of Quadriceps Exercises on Knee Pain and Muscle Strength among Elderly People in Egypt

Research Abstract

Knee pain is a common complaint in older adults. Exercise is now consistently recommended in improving Quadriceps muscle.

Aim

To investigate the effect of quadriceps exercises on knee pain and muscle strength among elderly people.

Method

Experimental research design was used. This study was implemented at the elderly Clubs in Assiut Governorate. The studied sample involved 150 elderly (75 study, 75 control) who selected by simple random sample technique. An interview questionnaire was used which included their socio-demographic characteristics, measurement of quadriceps muscle strength and Knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score scale which contained 5 separately scored subscales (pain, symptoms and stiffness, function in daily living, function in sport and recreation, and knee-related quality of life).

Results

There were significant relationship between KOOS Sub-domains in pre and post-test among elderly people (study group) (P. value= 0.046, 0.014, 0.004, 0.010) except in sport/Rec domain (P. value= 0.354) and in quadric muscle strength measurement (P value= 0.001).

Conclusion

Quadriceps exercises are effective in the decreasing pain, improvement of function and quality of life for elderly patients with knee joint pain. Therapeutic exercise should be used to relieve pain, stiffness and improvement of physical function for elderly patient

Association of Frailty Comorbidity with Incidence of Fractures among Elderly at Assiut Trauma University Hospital

Research Abstract

Background

Frailty is a growing public health concern, impacts clinical care significantly. As the elderly population expands, frailty rates are expected to increase. Bone fractures are a public health issue especially in elderly people that lead to disability, impaired quality of life, and high health-care costs.

Aim

To assess the association of frailty comorbidity with incidence of fractures among elderly.

Research design

A descriptive cross-sectional research design.

Setting

inpatient ward and outpatients' clinics in Trauma Hospital at Assiut University.

Sample

A convenience sample of 321 older adult patients who had Fractures. Study tools: Three tools were selected I: Structured interviewing questionnaire II: Reported Edmonton Frail Scale to assess frailty for elderly patients with fractures and II: Charlson Comorbidity Index scale to assess level of comorbidity.

Results

The proportions of falls as a cause of fracture were 81.7% for all fractures and 76.0% of the studied elderly patients fall in their home. The most common fractures in the total population was the hip fracture (48.6%), and femur fracture (22.4%). Most of studied elderly patients have severe frailty (52.7%), moderate frailty (17.4%). This study found statistical significant difference between patient’s comorbidities and frailty at p-value <0.000.

Conclusion

The study highlights the association of frailty and incidence of fractures among elderly patients and level of comorbidities.

Recommendation

Implement evidence-based rehabilitation programs to improve mobility and reduce complications after fractures.

Adaptation Training Program for Elderly Cleaners Exposed to sunlight

Research Abstract

Elderly cleaners are exposed to sunlight while working outdoors, thereby increasing their risk of sunburn and heat-related illnesses, including skin damage, dehydration, and skin cancer. Wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen is essential for safety.

Aim

Evaluate the effectiveness of an adaptation training program for elderly cleaners exposed to sunlight.

Research design

A quasi-experimental study design was used in this study.

Setting

The study was conducted in the cities of Beni Suef and Sohag.

Subjects

A convenience sample involved 111 elderly cleaners in a previous setting.

Tool

An interviewing questionnaire consisted of five parts: 1st part: Demographic characteristics; 2nd part: Medical history; 3rd part: Knowledge of elderly cleaners; 4th part: Attitudes of elderly cleaners; and 5th part: Reported practices of elderly cleaners regarding sunlight exposure.

Results

The study found that 5.0% of the elderly cleaners had a good total knowledge level before the pre-training program, and this increased to 77.0% after applying the training program. 89.0% of them had inadequate levels of total reported practices before applying to the training program, which improved to 90.0% of them having adequate total reported practices after applying to an adaptation training program. Also, a statistically significant relationship was found between the demographic characteristics of elderly cleaners and their total knowledge, total attitude, and total reported practices regarding sunlight exposure.

Conclusion

The adaptation training programs have a positive effect on improving knowledge, attitudes, and reported practices of elderly cleaners …
