Effect of skin integrity care bundle on hospital acquired pressure ulcer among patient with traction

Research Abstract

Background: Hospital acquired pressure ulcers represent a significant burden to both patients and healthcare providers. Skin integrity care bundle is a set of nursing interventions, each part of which has been proven in clinical practice to prevent hospital acquired pressure ulcer among patient with traction. Aim: Explore the effect of skin integrity care bundle on hospital acquired pressure ulcer among patient with traction. Setting: Trauma and emergency ddepartment at Assiut university Hospital. Sample: A Sixty (33 male and 27 female) adult patients with traction were included in the study; patients were divided equally into two groups (study and control). Tools: (I) A structured interview-based questionnaire, (II) Skin assessment observation check list and Braden scale for predicting pressure ulcer risk. Results: Skin integrity care bundle had a positive effect in preventing the development of pressure ulcer among studied patients in the study group where the majority (90%) of the patients showed no pressure ulcers or no sign of pressure ulcer after application of the nursing intervention while pressure ulcers were observed among more than two thirds of the patients in the control group. Conclusion: The program succeeded in preventing the development of pressure ulcers. Recommendations: Hospitals' policy should enforce the application of nursing intervention measures to prevent the occurrence of pressure ulcer. Keywords: Hospital acquired pressure ulcer, Patient with traction, & Skin integrity care bundle

Do a health educational booklet and telephone follow-up sessions about long-term oxygen therapy influence health-related outcomes in COPD Patients?

Research Abstract

Long-term oxygen therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for patients with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic respiratory failure. Patients must adhere to it to improve respiratory function as well as health status. Aim: To determine the influence of a health educational booklet and telephone follow-up sessions about long-term oxygen therapy on health-related outcomes in COPD patients. Research design: One group pre-and post-test. Setting: Chest Diseases Department and Outpatient Chest Clinic within the Main Assuit University Hospital. Subject: Thirty patients with COPD received LTOT. Tool one: A structured interviews sheet with COPD patients. Tool two: Health Status assessment questionnaire involved two parts: the first section, the Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire for COPD Patients (SGRQ-C), and the second section, the Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnoea Scale (MMRC). Results: After receiving a health educational booklet and subsequent telephone follow-up sessions at 3 and 6 months, there was a noteworthy enhancement in arterial blood gas values and all components of the Saint George's Respiratory and Dyspnea scores, displaying statistical significance (p-value = 0.001**). Conclusion: The health educational booklet and telephone follow-up sessions regarding LTOT usage led to enhancements in COPD patients' health-related outcomes, a reduced frequency of hospital admissions, alleviated dyspnea, improved arterial blood gas and spirometry values, and enhanced overall health status in COPD patients. Recommendations: A health educational booklet and subsequent telephone follow-up sessions are recommended to be an integral part of and relevant to patients education to uncover patients’ attitudes toward clinical practice procedures. Keywords: A Health Educational Booklet, COPD Patients, Health - related outcomes, Long-term oxygen therapy & Telephone follow-up sessions.

Intramedullary Nailing of Femoral Shaft Fractures Patients: Impact of Nursing Rehabilitation Protocol on Complications and Lower Extremity Function

Research Abstract

Background: Intramedullary nailing is a common method of treatment for femoral shaft fractures. Aim: To evaluate impact of nursing rehabilitation protocol on complications and lower extremity function of intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures patients. Research design: quasi-experimental research design. Setting: Trauma unit and orthopedic outpatient clinics at Assiut University Hospital. Sample: A convenient sample of one hundred patients aged 18–75 years old and from both sexes with intramedullary nails was divided into two equal groups (50 for each group). Tools: I, "A structured interview-based femoral shaft intramedullary nailing questionnaire," II, "Postoperative complications assessment questionnaire following femoral intramedullary nailing surgery," and III, "Lower Extremity Functional Scale." Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the study and the control group regarding the occurrence of some complications and the total mean score of the lower extremity functional scale during follow up periods after application of the nursing rehabilitation protocol post-intramedullary nailing (p-value = 0.001**, 0.005**, respectively). Conclusion: Nursing rehabilitation protocol has a positive effect on reducing complications and improving lower extremity function after intramedullary nailing. Recommendations: Rehabilitation protocol is recommended to be an integral part of the preoperative nursing teaching for patients undergoing intramedullary nailing surgery, and a booklet should be available at the trauma unit and orthopedic outpatient clinic as a reference.

Telehealth program: Effect of Physiotherapy Intervention on Dyspnea, Fatigue and Functional Status of Post COVID-19 Syndrome patients

Research Abstract

Post COVID-19 syndrome, that is marked by dyspnea, fatigue, and functional impairment, is best treated with a nonpharmacologic aproach entitled a physiotherapy intervention program. Aim: To evaluate the effect of physiotherapy intervention program through telehealth on dyspnea, fatigue and functional status of post COVID-19 syndrome patients. Design: The study utilized a one-group pre and posttest Quasi experimental design with a purposive sample of 60 post Covid-19 syndrome patients. Setting: Isolation Medical Unit and Post Covid-19 follow up clinic in main Assiut University Hospital. Tools: Data were collected using a structured interview Patient's assessment questionnaire, Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnoea Scale, Chalder fatigue scale, and Post COVID-19 Functional Status Scale. Results: statistically extremely significant differences regarding degrees of dyspnea , extent of fatigue, and functional status of post Covid-19 syndrome patients in pre, post (8th wks.), and follow up (12th wk.) of program application with (p=0.001). Conclusion: Physiotherapy intervention program applied through telehealth had significant improvement clinically and statistically on dyspnea, fatigue, and functional status. Recommendations: Telehealth is especially important currently, as social distancing measures thus using this intervention program by nurses can be effective in improving post Covid-19 syndrome symptoms.
