Relationship between internalized Stigma, Self –esteem and Capacity of Intimate relationships among bipolar and schizophrenic Patients

Research Abstract
Internalization of stigma often leads to negative feelings (about self), maladapted behavior, identity transformation, or stereotype endorsement. The purpose of the study: was to identify the relationship between internalized stigma, self esteem and the capacity for intimacy among bipolar and schizophrenic hospitalized patients. Design: Descriptive correlational research design was used in this study. Setting: The study was carried out at the psychiatric inpatient unit of the department of Psychiatry at Assiut University Hospital. The study sample comprised 100 patients (55 patients with schizophrenia and 45 of them with bipolar disorders). Instruments of the study: three instruments were used for data collection: namely: Internalized stigma of mental illness scale (ISMI), Self – esteem inventory, and Intimacy attitude scale – revised. Results: The main results yielded by the study proved that there were highly statistical significant differences between internalized stigma, self – esteem and intimacy scales , there were stastically significant differences between self- esteem, stereotype and social withdrawal, and there were positive strong correlation between self- esteem and intimacy. Recommendation: Design and implement psychoeducational programs to improve patient's self-esteem and decrease internalized stigma. Longitudinal studies that monitor levels of patient's self-esteem and stigma over time are needed to evaluate patient's capacity for intimate relation.

Psychological distress and Social support among Homeless adults

Research Abstract
Many studies find that psychological distress, in the form of anxiety, stress and depression, is common amongst homeless populations. Aim of the study: The study aimed to examine the psychological distress and social support among homeless adults. Design: The study design was Descriptive – explorative study design was used. Setting: the study was carried out in the homeless adults in Assiut city; the shelter provides social care for men and children, and the study sample comprised 100 persons. The age of them ranged from 18- 64 years old, within a period of six months from December 2014 to May 2015.Tools of the study: Three tools were used for data collection: namely: Sociodemographic Data Structured Interview schedule, Depression Anxiety Stress scale and Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire . Results: The main results yielded by the study proved that half of them aged from 31 to 45 years old, had never married, not worked, the majority of sample had severe anxiety and stress and the highest percentage of the studied sample had bad social support. Recommendation: The study recommended to positive social support may help homeless people get out of homelessness and avoid health and mental health problems.

The Effect of Assertiveness Training Program on Psychiatric Nurses' Communication Skills and Self – Esteem

Research Abstract
Assertiveness is one of the essential skills in the modern working environment, there are many benefits of being assertive such as; better time management, increased self-esteem and the ability to negotiate more effectively. Psychiatric mental health nurses are confronted with the daily responsibility of assessing, intervening and evaluating client responses to stress and client interactions. They need to identify the meaning of their own stress and develop strategies that increase personal and professional growth. Some nurses may have learned to express their needs honestly to use anger constructively, to improve personal and work relationships and to build self-confidence through assertive behavior. But others still struggle with being assertive, perhaps because they don’t believe they have the right to be assertive, they are anxious about asserting themselves or they don't know how to be assertive. Learning assertive techniques are considered as tools for coping skills with a variety of life stressors. Increasing assertive behavior becomes an expression of person's feelings. So the aim of this study was to assess the effect of assertiveness communication skills training program on improving self-esteem of psychiatric nurses. Subjects and methods: The study was conducted at The Psychiatric mental health Hospital in Assiut, Egypt. The study sample comprised 30 nurses (14 males and 16 females), three tools were used for data collection, namely: Sociodemographic Data Structured Interview schedules, , Self – esteem inventory, assertive Communication skills checklist (ACs – list),. The main results yielded by the study proved that, the highest percentage among nurses aged from or more than 30 years, females than males, and single, more than ⅔ (73.3%) of the studied group was lived in rural area. the study recommended continuous education provided for all nursing personal working and make nurses updated of new knowledge and technology. Conclusion: Implementation of assertiveness training program with psychiatric nurses has a positive effect on improving their self-esteem. Recommendation: Implementation of assertiveness training program for all nurses and for undergraduate nursing students.

Psychosocial Health Profile and Social Support among patients with Chronic Renal failure at Assiut University Hospital

Research Abstract
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) draws heavily on patients’ daily functioning. The disease, treatment and associated demands have a great impact on physical and emotional wellbeing and interfere with patients’ social roles. Patients with CKD who are being prepared for, or receive renal replacement therapy often experience difficulties in participating in various domains of life, such as paid work, sports and other social and Leisure activities. This study aimed to assess and identify the psychosocial health profile among patients with chronic renal failure and shed light social support available for them. The study was carried out at the hemodialysis unit at Assiut university hospital. The hospital is serving Assiut city and Upper Egypt governorates. The study sample comprised All patients attending to the dialysis unit and who are agree to participate in the study within a period of 6 months from October 2013 to April 2014. The study subjects mounted about 334 cases but 44 cases was dropped from the study due to die and refuse to complete the study, the actual amount of the study about 290 cases. Four tools were used for data collection: namely: Sociodemographic Data Structured Interview schedules:, Social readjustment rating scale by (Holmes and Rahe), Beck depression inventory scale by Beck, and Social Support scale by Zimet and Farley .The main results yielded by the study proved that males more than female (54.8%). Regarding their marital status, more Than half of the studied sample was married (61.0%), concerning the level of stress, the majority of patients (84.8%) had moderate level of stress, regarding to the social readjustment level (70.3%) of them had highly exposed to stress than others. The majority of patients had moderate depression (42.3%). (69.3%) of patients had high social support mainly their families (59.3%).The study recommended psychological counseling and psychotherapy may be necessary and assisting the patients and their families to cope with the changes brought about by renal failure and its treatment.
