“A New Medical Achievement in Assiut”: Cement Injection for Pelvic Bone Metastases at the South Egypt Cancer Institute

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, has praised the success of the newly established Interventional Radiology Unit at the South Egypt Cancer Institute in performing a series of cementoplasty procedures for patients suffering from secondary pelvic bone tumors. He highlighted that this advanced technique significantly helps reduce patients’ pain and improves mobility, particularly in advanced cases where surgical intervention is not feasible.

Professor El-Minshawy affirmed that this achievement marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to develop the medical and therapeutic system at Assiut University. He commended the expertise of the medical teams who have succeeded in applying cutting-edge global techniques to serve cancer patients across Upper Egypt.

Professor Mohamed Abu El-Magd, Dean of the Institute, explained that cement injection under CT guidance is a precise interventional procedure aimed at stabilizing the bone and alleviating pain by using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).

The procedures were carried out under the supervision of a distinguished medical team, including Professor Amr Farouk Mourad, Professor Haitham Ahmed Sami, Professor Mostafa Hashim, and Professor Maha Hossam El-Araby, with the participation of an anesthesia team led by Dr. Nourhan Alaa, and under the supervision of Professor Sahar Abdel-Baqi. This achievement reflects the integration of medical and research efforts at the Institute, ensuring advanced care and improved outcomes for cancer patients.

Lights Out for an Hour: Assiut University Joins the Global “Earth Hour” Sustainability Initiative

Assiut University participated in the global environmental event “Earth Hour” as part of its commitment to environmental efforts, climate change mitigation, raising ecological awareness, and encouraging the university community to adopt sustainable practices and reduce energy consumption.

The university turned off the lights in its buildings for one hour, starting at 8:30 p.m., in support of global efforts to
conserve energy and address climate change.


Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, emphasized that the university’s participation reflects its societal responsibility toward environmental protection and serves as a vital awareness message to promote a culture of preserving natural resources.

Professor Mahmoud Abdel-Aleem, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, noted that the university’s involvement aimed to shed light on the dangers of climate change and highlight the importance of reducing energy consumption. He also pointed to the wide positive engagement from students, faculty members, and staff.

This participation comes as part of Egypt’s leading role in combating climate change and supporting global initiatives dedicated to achieving sustainable development.

 

“Successful Rare Surgery in Assiut”: Complete Laparoscopic Resection of a Duodenal Tumor for a New Valley Patient

A major medical achievement at the South Egypt Cancer Institute, surgeons successfully perform a complete laparoscopic Whipple procedure to remove a malignant duodenal tumor, showcasing the institute’s advanced capabilities in minimally invasive oncology surgery and its commitment to enhancing healthcare quality in Upper Egypt.

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, announced the successful completion of a full laparoscopic Whipple procedure to remove a cancerous tumor in the duodenum for a patient from the New Valley Governorate. The operation, which typically lasts 12 hours when performed through open surgery, was completed in just six hours using laparoscopic techniques.

Professor El-Minshawy highlighted that this achievement reaffirms the institute’s leadership in advanced oncology surgeries and its dedication to employing state-of-the-art medical technologies to reduce complications, accelerate patient recovery, and improve the standard of healthcare services in Upper Egypt.

The surgery was conducted under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Abu El-Magd, Dean of the South Egypt Cancer Institute, and Professor Doaa Wadie Maximus, Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, with the participation of a specialized medical team. The procedure included radical tumor excision with adequate safety margins and the removal of 14 lymph nodes.

Since 2019, the institute has been steadily advancing its laparoscopic surgical programs, given their numerous medical advantages, including reduced blood loss, faster recovery, less postoperative pain, and enhanced quality of life. This latest success underscores the institute’s position as a leading center for cancer treatment in southern Egypt.

 Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, expressed his appreciation for the significance of World Water Day, observed annually on March 22. He stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing global water security challenges. He also praised Egypt’s efforts in water resource management through strategies focused on rationalization, desalination, wastewater treatment, and regional and international collaboration to ensure sustainable resource use.

Assiut University marks International Women’s Day with a seminar titled “To You, Lady: Your Role in Shaping the Future,” aimed at highlighting the pivotal role of women in building society and advancing sustainable development, while promoting awareness of the importance of women’s economic and social empowerment in line with Egypt’s national vision.

The Social Therapy and Family Counseling Center at the Faculty of Social Work, Assiut organized the seminar under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of the University, and the supervision of Professor Mahmoud Abdel-Aleem, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development.

In his speech, Professor El-Minshawy reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting women’s issues and empowering them across various sectors, in alignment with the state’s comprehensive development agenda.

Professor Mahmoud Abdel-Aleem discussed the vital role of women in achieving sustainable development and strengthening family and community structures. Professor Eman Abdel-Aal praised the achievements of women and their ability to drive positive change, while Professor Ghada Abdel-Aal emphasized that empowering women is an investment in a more just and prosperous future.

El-Minshawy: “For Her and With Her” Project Is a Leading Model in Supporting Women and Strengthening Social Cohesion

Assiut University participates in the closing ceremony of the “For Her and With Her” project, which aims to combat violence against women, promote national unity, uphold women’s rights, and address gender-based violence, while fostering collaboration between religious and community institutions to advance comprehensive social development.

Under the patronage of Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, the university took part in the Iftar ceremony and closing event of the “For Her and With Her” project, held at the Catholic Coptic Diocese in Assiut. The project was implemented in partnership with the Together for Development Association and the Eparchy Development Office, with support from the British Embassy in Egypt.

Professor El-Minshawy emphasized that the project represents an important step in addressing violence against women and raising community awareness of women's rights, highlighting the role of educational and civil society institutions in promoting a culture of respect and equality.

Professor Ahmed Abdel-Mawla praised the efforts of participants and volunteers in implementing the community initiatives, while Professor Mahmoud Abdel-Aleem explained that the project included training sessions and awareness programs for families, teachers, and NGOs.

“Eid al-Fitr Holiday at Assiut University” – Professor El-Minshawy Announces Official Holiday for All Staff, Faculty, and Students

In implementation of the Prime Minister’s decision, Assiut University announces Eid al-Fitr holiday.

In accordance with the decree issued by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, has announced an official holiday for all university staff, faculty members, and students on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.

The holiday will begin on Saturday, March 29, 2025, and continue until Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as per the Cabinet decision. The holiday will be extended to Wednesday, April 2, 2025, should the sighting of the Shawwal crescent be confirmed on Monday, March 31.

Professor El-Minshawy extended his greetings to all members of the university community on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, wishing them a joyful holiday and encouraging everyone to resume academic activities and studies with renewed energy and enthusiasm upon their return.

Professor El-Minshawy and Minister of Higher Education Attend Iftar Gathering for International Students in Assiut

The President of Assiut University participates in the annual Iftar banquet for international students in the presence of the Minister of Higher Education, to strengthen ties between Egyptian universities and international students, and to support Egypt’s position as a globally attractive educational destination in line with the Higher Education Vision 2024–2029.

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, attended the annual Iftar gathering for international students, accompanied by Professor Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, alongside a number of university presidents, ambassadors, and cultural attachés.

In his address, Professor El-Minshawy affirmed the university’s commitment to supporting international students both academically and administratively, as part of its strategic plan (2024–2029), aligned with the state’s vision for sustainable development.

Minister Ayman Ashour emphasized that attracting international students is a national priority, highlighting efforts to develop the educational service ecosystem through the “Study in Egypt” platform and to update academic programs to meet the needs of the labor market.

The event concluded with an informal meeting between the Minister, the President of Assiut University, and the international students, who expressed their gratitude for the distinguished academic and cultural support provided by Egyptian universities.
