Disability can affect each and every one of us throughout our lives. Thus, it is crucial to understand disability, disablism, and the experience of the disabled. Disability studies and literature are well connected since writers portray disability and the disabled in their fictional works. The cultural model of disability is employed to analyze the confrontation between the disabled and the non-disabled in Susan Nussbaum’s Good Kings Bad Kings (2013). Nussbaum, an American disabled writer, is dissatisfied with the representation of disability and the disabled in literature, so she attempts to highlight the predicament of the disabled, and focuses on the most important problems they face. This paper traces these problems, and examines the role of society and culture in shaping the lives of the disabled and disempowering them.
March 11, 2020 is an unforgettable day for the whole world as the WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced COVID-19 a pandemic. Thus, the world has turned upside down ever since as millions contracted the virus while others lost their lives. Panic and grief overwhelmed the scene, and people have become preoccupied with existential issues such as isolation, identity, freedom, death, and meaning of existence. The focus of the present study is a prophetic novel called Songs for the End of the World (2020) by Saleema Nawaz, a Canadian novelist, who depicts a pandemic similar to COVID- 19. Through an understanding of existential concerns and Albert Camus’s concept of ‘the Absurd’, the paper aims to examine how the pandemic threatens the characters’ sense of existence, and how they manage to find meaning amid the pandemic. Applying Camus’s ideas suggests embracing absurdity as the key to cope with the pandemic and find a meaningful life.
The Syrian refugee crisis is one of the most urgent problems that came to the forefront ten years ago, specifically in March 2011. At that time, the Arab Spring revolts had taken place in the Middle East in 2010 and to some extent achieved success in Tunisia and Egypt in 2011, so the Syrians believed they too could get rid of their authoritarian regime. Unfortunately, the protests in Syria have led to a civil war from which they are still suffering. Most of the protesters were either imprisoned or killed. Others ran for their lives and left Syria while the rest remained living under inhuman conditions. This paper aims to use the pluralistic model of trauma in Layla Al Ammar’s, a Kuwaiti novelist, Silence is a Sense (2021) to understand the traumatic event and its impact on a Syrian refugee in addition to applying Renos K. Papadopoulos’s framework of involuntary dislocation to analyze and describe the journey and experience of that traumatized Syrian refugee.
Climate change is one of the significant and threatening problems worldwide. It has attracted the attention of scientists and politicians as well as writers and critics especially in the western world. Writers have responded by writing climate change fiction despite the challenges of representation. James Bradley, an Australian novelist and critic, is one of those writers who are deeply occupied by the impacts of climate change. He has written Clade (2017) which traces the life of Adam Leith, a climatologist, and his family descendants amid the disastrous consequences of climate change. To analyze this novel, the researcher focuses on solastalgia, and applies the approach of everyday aesthetics. In a nutshell, the paper attempts to highlight the impact of climate change, examine the relationship between the characters and their environment, and explore the possibility of adaptation and detection of aesthetic values in an environment destroyed by climate change.
