First Egyptian Medical Team to Achieve New Mutation in Cerebral Catheter Surgery in Assiut University Hospitals

A medical team in Assiut University hospitals has managed to achieve a remarkable success in cerebral catheter surgery with application of a new technique for the first time in Egypt using the imported Onyx material in a very critical surgery which is only done in a specialized Medical Center in Paris. The team headed by Dr. Mustafa Hashem, Professor of internal radiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Assiut in collboration  with Dr. Ibrahim Desouky, Dr. Wageeh Abdul Hafeez , Dr Mahmoud Refaat, and Dr. Ahmed Omar from the Department of Radiology, has managed in doing this meticulous surgery and thus saving the life of a 13 -year-old child named Hussein Abdullah. The child was suffering from a congenital defect in the blood vessels; a defect which results in varicose veins and arteries in the brain and the inevitable explosion of the blood vessels which most commonly leads to sudden death of the patient or entire paralysis if not properly treated. Prof. Hashem indicated that cases such as this were formerly treated by a surgery based on filling the defected spots by a mixture of resin and opaque oil. Success in these cases of surgeries did not exceed 40 % and most often bleeding during surgery might occur during the operation. Besides, this did not completely heal the defects, and there remained a possibility of continuous bleeding: a matter that threatened the patient’s life. As for this case, Prof. Hashem said, they have used  Onyx; an internationally recognized for its capacity to seal and completely block the defected spots with a 90% ratio of success, but most medical doctors do not resort to Onyx due to the highly critical nature of these surgeries which demand  advanced training in specialized medical centers for any slight mistake would cause the loss of the patient’s life. Prof Hashem himself indicated that he has benefitted a great deal from his training experience in the largest center for cerebral catheter in Paris.  Dr. Hashem added that the medical team of Assiut University managed to operate this surgery successfully for  the child who left back home on the next day of the surgery.
