In Participation with Assiut University's Celebrations of the World Day for Women: Swiss Ambassador Asserts His Country's Support of All Societal and Developmental Activities and Welcomes More Cooperation and Fruitful Partnership with Assiut University

Under the auspices of Dr. Ahmed A. Gaeis, Assiut University President, the university launched the celebrations of the World Day for Women, organized by the Center for Studies and Research on Human Rights (CSRHR). The event was honored by the presence of Mr. Paul Garnier, Ambassador of Switzerland in Cairo, Dr. Essam Zanati, ex Vice President and Director of the (CSRHR), Alxander Boderoza, Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Cairo, Dr. Sahar Abdel-Moula, Chair of National Council for Women, Assiut, Fatma Al-Khayat Vice Minister for Social Solidarity, and a number of Faculty Deans and representatives from the Civil Community and students.

Gaeis, Assiut University President, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Latif, Vice President for Community Service and Environment Development, Dr. Tarek Al-Gammal, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, and Dr. Shehata Ghareeb, Supervisor of Students, Assiut University ended the Forum of Students Political Education by two cultural sessions: the role of students activities in the reinforcement of values of belonging and political participation.

Al-Orman Cardiology Hospital, Assiut University Manages in Conducting Two Rare Chest Surgeries by the Use of Surgical Chest Endoscope

  Dr. Ahmed Al-Menshawi, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Assiut University Hospitals, announced the success of two surgeries done at Al-Orman University Hospital. The surgeries were done by the use of surgical chest endoscope and this is considered one of the most complicated surgeries worldwide. The surgeries were conducted by the department of Chest and cardiology together with surgeons and world experts in the use of chest endoscopes under the auspices of Dr. Ahmed A. Gaeis, Assiut University President. Dr. Hosam Al-Arabi, Director of the Hospital indicated that the surgeries came as part of the first operational proceedings of the fourth workshop on the endoscopic chest surgeries. The workshop was organized by the Department of Cardiology and Chest Surgeries in collaboration with a number of renowned and reputable world professors and surgeons. Of these surgeons are Dr. Mustafa Yoksel, Dr. Aasem Kotlu, and Dr. Tushen Lasheen from Turkey, Dr. Alan Show from Chest Surgeries, Shanghai, China. Dr. Khaled Aamer, Professor of Chest Surgeries, England, and a number of Egyptian experts including: Dr. Hany Hasan, Ain Shams University, Dr. Waleed Abu-Arab, Alexandria University, and Dr. Amr Abdul-Latif, Mansoura University.

In Celebration of the Science Day : HE the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Mostafa Mosaad held a broad meeting

In the presence of Dr. Mostafa Kamal, President of Assiut University, HE the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Mostafa Mosaad held a broad meeting with Assiut University faculty members. In this meeting, the Minister handled a number of issues including the efforts of the ministry in enhancing academic research, encouraging scholars through training programs and missions abroad which exceeded the number of 1500 sponsored scholarship around the whole world annually. He also stressed the importance of Open Education to enroll the huge numbers of students exceeding one million students in the Egyptian Universities, in addition to the importance of Private Institutes and Colleges which accommodate more than 350 thousand students.   Dr. Mostafa Mosaad asserted the Minister's prospectus plan to increase the number of Egyptian governmental Universities to reach one hundred universities within the duration of 10 years, since the number of the 22 existing governmental universities is considered meager if compared to the number of universities in the world and the status of Egypt as a state of rich resources. HE the Minister added that the country's aspirations and visions are all dependant on universities as long as the society considers that it is only the effort of the universities which can lead the country to overcome the present crises. Statistically, the Minister pointed out that the country spends about 1% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on higher Education and is supposed to increase the figure into 3.45% within 10 years.   Regarding the Universities, Dr. Mosaad also assured that the Ministry concentrates on a of important issues including Quality Assurance for which a constant item in the Supreme Council of Universities has been devoted to follow up the continued improvement particularly when most universities have now acquired good experience in the field.   Regarding the rules of Promotion Committees, the Minister indicated that tentative plans and procedures have been exposed for discussion to overcome the defects in the procedures of the previous committee-rounds and solve problems to many. Whenever the argument over this issue is settled, a final form will be declared. Moreover, the Minister talked about the new Students' By-law which will enable students and preserve their rights within a number of resolutions that will benefit students and the educational process.

CSSP Research Grants 2013 Call for Application

The BA Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) announces the call for applications for the 2013 Research Grants Program to support outstanding young postdoctoral Egyptian researchers who perform cutting edge research and undertake collaborative investigation approaches across the science and technology spectrum. The program covers research in Natural sciences, Mathematics, Information Technology, and Pre-University Education. The maximum duration of the project is 2 years and the maximum budget that can be granted is 75,000 EGP. Deadline for application is 30 April 2013.Eligibility and Deadlines    Egyptian scholars who have earned their PhD within the past five years (following December 2007).    Applicants must hold a current position at a public/private academic or research institution in Egypt, and the research must be conducted in Egypt.    Currently engaged or can arrange to work on a joint research project with foreign counterpart(s) at a university or research center abroad.    Applicants must not exceed 35 years of age by January 2013.    Grant applications must be submitted online before 30 April 2013.More information and application requirements are available at:http://www.bibalex.org/CSSP2013

Mahathir Science Award Nomination

The Academy of Scientific Research and Technology recieved a letter from Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) for Mahathir science award nomination.The Mahathir Science Award is bestowed on any scientists, institutions or organization worldwide in recognition of contributions and innovations towards solving problems in the tropics through science and technology and to be awarded to the most deserving based on merit. This Award will be given to researchers who have made internationally recognised breakthroughs in pioneering tropical research in the following fields:i. Tropical Medicineii. Tropical Agricultureiii.
