Mothers’ knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices towards their Children with Cerebral Palsy at Assiut City, Egypt

Background: Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders caused by damage in the developing brain that affect the brain‟s ability to control movement and maintain posture and balance. Aim of the study: To assess mothers‟ knowledge, attitudes, and reported practices towards their children with cerebral palsy at Assiut city, Egypt. Setting: The study was carried out in Nour Al-Hayat center for rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy, Kian rehabilitation center and Comprehensive rehabilitation center. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used in this study. The total number of sample was 210 mothers. Tools of the study: Structured interviewing questionnaire was consisted of four tools for data collection. First tool included socioeconomic scale, characteristics of mothers and their children. Second tool: Mothers‟ knowledge about CP. Third tool: Mothers‟ attitude scale. Fourth tool: Mothers‟ reported practices. Results: One-third of mothers their ages were ≥ 35 years and two-fifths of them had secondary and intermediate institute education. 59.5% of mothers had poor knowledge, 40.5% had neutral attitude and 78.1% of them had unsatisfactory reported practices. Conclusion: There were statistical significant differences between mothers' mothers' socio-demographic characteristics and their total knowledge, attitudes and reported practices regarding care of their children with cerebral palsy. Also, there was positive correlation between knowledge and reported practices scores. Recommendation: Development of an educational and training program should be conducted for mothers to improve their knowledge and practices in caring for their children with CP.

The 25th Charity Exhibition for Ready-Made Clothes was inaugurated today for the male and female students of the Nursing Faculty, a contribution from the faculty community to bring joy to the students, with the participation of 300 students and a total of 500 clothing pieces.

, the Dean of the Faculty, on the occasion of the International Day celebrating the elderly.

Representing the Faculty Dean, Professor. Samah Mohamed Abdullah, were Professor. Ikram Ibrahim, the Faculty's Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and Professor. Nahed Shoukry Abu El-Magd, the Faculty's Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, to inaugurate the scientific day celebrating the elderly.

The day included various lectures:

  • A lecture titled "Climate Change and Its Impact on the Health of the Elderly" presented by Professor. Atef El-Qarn, a Pulmonologist and President of the Chest Association in Assiut.
  • Dr. Nermeen Mahmoud, a Professor and Head of the Gerontology Nursing Department, delivered a lecture on "Health Changes with Aging and Their Impact on Climate Tolerance."
  • Dr. Hanan Abu Zeid, an Gerontology Nursing Professor, highlighted a lecture on "Dealing with Climate Change for the Elderly."

The event was attended by faculty members, their assistants from the Nursing Faculty, and a number of postgraduate students and fourth-year students.

Effective and Elaborative Induction Program for Mitigating Myths and Misconceptions Linked to Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in a Resource Limited Setting

Research Abstract

Since the first transplant in 1957 and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the curative modality for numerous hematological disorders. Nevertheless, it is not available for all patients. Besides unavailability of matched donors a lot of factors could hinder HSCT in a resource limited setting, as financial and administrative factors. In our daily practice we noticed other factors that hinder HSCT in our center, the common myths and misconceptions about HSCT and donation. This quasi-experimental study assessed, for the first time, common myths and misconceptions about HSCT among 218 medical and nursing students before and after an interventional educational program. The study tool was an investigators' developed self-administered questionnaire. Participants' male to female ratio was 1:2.5, and FAS was middle in 52.7%. Knowledge and Attitude of Nurses Regarding Newborn Hearing Impairment and Screening at Health Centers and clinics in Assiut City

Abstract
Background: Hearing impairment is a partial or total inability to hear, may occur in one or both ears. In children hearing problems can affect the ability to learn spoken language and result in loneliness. Aim of the study: assess knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding Newborn Hearing Impairment and screening at Health Centers and clinics in Assiut City. Subjects and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional design was used. A Total coverage sample of 235 nurses has participated. Tool 1: A structured self-administered questionnaire, it included three parts, Part one: personal data, Part two: questions related to attending training course regarding newborn hearing screening, Part three: knowledge about Newborn Hearing Impairment (NHI) and screening. Tool 2: It included two scales, Part one: Attitude assessment scale about NHI, and Part two: Attitude assessment scale about Newborn Hearing Screening. Results: 34.5% of nurses had poor knowledge, and 69.4% of them had a positive attitude regarding NHI, while 68.9% had a negative attitude against newborn hearing screening. There is a statistically significant difference between the score of nurses’ knowledge and their age. Conclusion: Deficit in nurses’ knowledge regarding newborn hearing impairment and screening; and fluctuation in their attitude between negative and positive. Also, there were statistically significant differences between the level of nurses’ attitude about newborn hearing screening, their age, and years of experience. Recommendations: in-service training programs should be developed and implemented for nurses.
