Patients Perceptions toward Nurses Caring Behaviors in Assiut University Hospital

Research Abstract
The importance of knowing what patients’ perceive as caring behaviors is a key element to providing compassionate nursing care. The purpose for this study was to identify medical-surgical patients' perceptions of caring behaviors among nurses in Assiut University Hospital. Method(s): A convenience sample of 100 patients was taken from Medical-Surgical units in Assiut University Hospital and participated in this study by accepting and completing the demographics questionnaire, and the Caring Behavior Assessment (CBA) questionnaire. Results: The findings from this study indicated that all (100%) of the respondents were dissatisfied with all aspects of nursing care they received. The top first six of the CBA items are ranked by patient participants as the most important caring behaviors were belonging to HumanismFaith-HopeSensitive subscale, Human Needs Assistance, and Supportive/Protective/ Corrective Environment subscale. Item analysis of patients’ responses on CBA scale revealed that six out of fourteen least important caring behaviors was belonged to Helping/Trust subscale and TeachingLearning subscale. This study also demonstrated that the patient satisfaction was relevant to the nurses caring behaviors. Conclusions & Recommendations: The study concluded that the age, gender, Marital Status, educational level and Hospitalization Experience variables were factors that influenced on the judgment of hospitalized patients regarding their level of satisfaction with the nursing care. This study also demonstrated that the patient satisfaction was relevant to the nurses caring behaviors. Therefore, creating a caring environment and improving the nurses’ caring behaviors may improve the patient quality of care and that will finally improve the patients’ satisfaction.

Impact of Education Program on Protein Balance among Hemodialysis Patient

Research Abstract
Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). PEW is one of the strongest predictors of mortality in patients with CKD. Malnutrition is Prevalent among Hemodialysis Patients (HDP) in Taif, Saudi Arabia. The purpose of this study is to assess the level of knowledge of dialysis patient about protein intake and to examine the impact of educational program on protein balance. A convenient sample of 40 patients (male and female) attended at dialysis unit at King Abdul-Aziz Specialized Taif- Hospital will be recruited. Inclusion criteria: Hemodialysis within one year and having a low albumin level. Each participant was asked to fill two questionnaires; one designed for demographics data and the other is designed for assessing knowledge level about protein intake. Nutritional status using anthropometrics measure and biochemical tests were examined before and after providing an educational program. Such examinations were done monthly and up to three months. Results Showed that significant differences in patients' outcomes regarding protein intakes, albumin levels, urea, creatinine and anthropometric measures Conclusion and Recommendations: Providing one-to-one nutrition education in current study was followed by an improvement in patients’ nutritional knowledge, practice and their compliance with dietary guidelines for the dialysis patient, so it was recommended to set up multidisciplinary, collective and individual interventions in order to improve understanding of the effects of education in regular bases.

The Effect of Concept Mapping on Students Learning Achievements and Interests in Taif University

Research Abstract
There is a growing awareness of the need for changes in nursing education systems, especially in developing self-learning techniques where the student is an active participant in the learning process. Nursing students are exposed to a vast amount of information and reading material that is very specific, technical, and new to the students, they need to able to link learned facts, concepts and principles with new knowledge in order to make sound rational decisions in practice. Concept mapping, a learning strategy used to understand key concepts and relationships between concepts, has been suggested as a method to plan and evaluate nursing care. The purposes for this study were to (1) Find out whether concept mapping improved students’ learning achievement in an advanced nursing courses within the nursing baccalaureate program; and Identify students’ attitudes towards using concept mapping as a learning tool. Method(s): One-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design used with senior-level baccalaureate students (n = 46) students from two classes enrolled in an advanced nursing course at taif - university in saudi Araba. Students completed questionnaires to self-evaluate their learning and report their satisfaction with concept mapping. Tools were constructed to collect the data, demographic questionnaire, End-of-Training-Concept of Mapping Usage Questionnaire, and End of Semester Concept Map Usage Questionnaire. Results: The experimental data revealed two important results. First, adopting a concept mapping strategy can significantly improve students’ learning achievement compared to using a traditional teaching method. Second, most of the students were satisfied with using concept mapping in advanced nursing courses. Conclusions & Recommendations: This study supported concept mapping as an additional learning strategy and has extended knowledge in the nursing education and also enhance student interests in learning nursing. Student also thought that concept mapping could be usefully used in other curriculum areas. Further study is recommended to study the relationship between learning style preference and concept mapping as a teaching strategy.

Comparative study: Quality of life between Assiut University hospital and Umulj hospital for patients with end stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis

Research Abstract
The present study aimed to; determine the quality of life of hemodialysis patients and to compare the quality of life of hemodialysis patients at Assiut University hospital and at Umulj hospital, Tabuk. Data were collected from the hemodialysis center at Assiut University hospital and at Umulj hospital, Tabuk. The study was conducted on 80 adult patients, having the following criteria; age between 18 – 65 years, both male and female patients with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis, 40 patients from each dialysis center. Data were collected through the following tools; Tool (I): Sociodemographic data sheet; including age, gender, marital status, educational level, occupation, residence, family number, duration of hemodialysis….etc. and Tool (II): World Health Organization Quality Of Life (WHOQOL); including 5 domains which are physical, social, psychological, environment, and perceived QOL. Results of this study; near half of the studied sample their age has ranged from 50 - 65 years in both groups, and more than half of the studied samples in both hospitals were having a moderate score in their quality of life. Conclusion; there was no statistically significant difference between both studied samples regarding their quality of life level, also a statistically significant relation was found between the studied groups regarding their quality of life and both patient's gender and occupation. The study recommended that; providing counseling for patient with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis will play an important role in improving the QOL of those patients.

Effect of designed nursing protocol on nurse's knowledge and practice regarding Chemotherapy

Research Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, each year, more than 11 million patients Worldwide receive a new diagnosis of cancer. This number is expected to rise to 16 million by 2020. Chemotherapy is still the main treatment regimen, and approximately 50% of patients with cancer receive chemotherapy .Currently, approximately 100 different anti-cancer drugs are in use and many more are under development. The characteristics of cancer drugs have given rise to many issues. One issue is whether nurses are competent to administer such drugs. The aims of the present, study is evaluate the effect of implementing the designed nursing protocol on nurse's knowledge and practice regarding chemotherapy. Aquasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study on a convenient sample of 35 nurses agree to participate in the study. This study was conducted in the South Egypt Cancer Institute at Assuit University. Tools utilize for data collection were a) Questionnaire sheet. .b) Observation checklist sheet. c) Construction of designed nursing protocol. Results: The first and the second hypotheses were supported as a good improvement in the mean knowledge & practice scores were found after the implementing of designed nursing protocol. . The third hypothesis was supported as a positive relationship was found between nurse's knowledge and practice scores immediately after application of the designed nursing protocol. In conclusion, the evidence-based results suggested that nurses have insufficient knowledge about chemotherapy. More fundamentally, however, nurses need more education about chemotherapy in nursing school and through in-hospital continuing education.
