Nursing Errors Regarding Preparation and Administration of Intravenous Drugs

Research Abstract
Background: Intravenous (IV) medications pose particular risks because of their greater complexity and the multiple steps required in their preparation, administration and monitoring. The aim of this study was; assess the nursing errors during preparation and administration of intravenous drugs. Research design: Descriptive research design used in this study. Subjects: Non probability (convenience) sample was utilized, consisting of all nurses (30 nurses, 18 nurses in burn unit and 12 nurses in plastic surgery unit). Tools: Self-administered questionnaire sheet designed to assess nurses' knowledge in preparation and administration of intravenous drugs and direct Observational check list sheet designed to assess nurses' practice regarding the preparation and administration of IV drugs. Results: More than half of the studied nurses have good knowledge 53.3% regarding preparation of IV drugs, 50% regarding Administration of IV drugs, more than half of them have adequate practice 60% and there were significant relation between nurses' demographic data and their nursing practice regarding training needs (p=0.042). Conclusion: more than half of the studied nurses have good knowledge and adequate practice. Recommendations The nurses need to continue attending training courses, and increase number of nurses in the units

Determination of Knowledge and Self Care Behavior of Heart Failure Pateints According to Orem Theory

Research Abstract
Background: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic disease that requires special lifelong self-care behaviors. These patients need having self-care behaviors to confront their disease problems. Aim of the study: To assess patient knowledge about heart failure and determine the self-care behavior of heart failure patients. Subject and methods: To conduct this study, a descriptive research design was utilized. Sample: a convenient sample of 60 patients with heart failure. The study was conducted in coronary care unit at Abou-tig central hospital. Tools: One tool was utilized to collect data for this study: Patient interviewing questionnaire sheet including three parts: Part (1) demographic characteristics of the patients, part (2): Dutch heart failure knowledge scale, part (3) Heart failure self-care behavior scale, Results: The majority of the studied patients (75%) had unsatisfactory knowledge levels, while the minority (26.7%) of them had good self-care behavior. Conclusion: The majority of the studied patients had unsatisfied level of knowledge about heart failure and had poor self-care behavior. Recommendation: patients with heart Failure are in pressing need for health education about their illness which will reflect on their self-care behavior and results in better quality of life

Effect of Catheter Care Maintenance Bundle on Reducing Incidence of Urinary Tract Infection among Catheterized Patients.

Research Abstract
Abstract Background: Infection of the urinary tract attributed to the use of an indwelling urinary catheter is one of the most common infections acquired by patients at health care centers. Aim: The primary aim of this study was to assess effect of catheter care maintenance bundle on reducing the incidence of urinary tract infection among catheterized patients. Setting: The study was conducted in the neurological department, affiliated to Assuit University Hospital Methods: This study was designed as interventional prospective study on purposive nonprobability sixty adult patients (experimental and control) undergoing urinary catheterization were included in this study. Results: There was a positive correlation between catheter care maintenance bundle and occurrence of urinary tract infection (P 0.003). Conclusion: Implementation of catheter care maintenance bundle intervention resulted in a reduction in the incidence of urinary tract infection among catheterized patients. Recommendations: Application of the catheter care maintenance bundle at all the settings that deal with urinary catheterization to decrease the infection rate.

Effect of Patellofemoral Joint Targeted Education, and Exercise Guidelines on Outcomes of Patients with Patellofemoral Osteoarthritis

Research Abstract
Background and objective: Patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis (PFJOA) is an under recognized category of arthritis, evident in almost 70% of adults with knee pain. Objective was to evaluate the effect of patellofemoral joint targeted education, and exercise guidelines on outcomes of patients with patellofemoral osteoarthritis. Methods: A quasi experimental (pre/post) design was used. Setting: The study was conducted in the physiotherapy department of a large University Hospital in Egypt. Sample: A randomized 30 adult patients with symptomatic and diagnosed PFJOA. Researchers and Physiotherapists delivered the PFJ-targeted education, and exercise program in 3 sessions over 9 month period. Results: The PFJ-targeted education, and exercise guidelines resulted in a highly statistically significant difference in the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) pre/posttest in the whole five domains of the questionnaire; Pain (nine items); Symptoms (seven items); ADL Function (17 items); Sport and Recreation Function (five items); and Quality of Life (four items) p. 001**. Conclusions: PFJ-targeted education, and exercise guidelines were more effective in reducing pain, improving physical function, and activities of daily living. Recommendation: Replication of the study using a larger probability sample from different geographical areas to help for generalization of the results.

Effect of Nursing Protocol on Nurses' Performance and Venous Thromboembolism Risks Among the Patients with Cancer Undergoing Surgery

Research Abstract
Background: Nurses play an important role in identifying, preventing and caring of VTE among cancer surgery patients. Aim: To assess the effect of nursing protocol on nurses’ performance and venous thromboembolism risks among the patients with cancer undergoing surgery. Research design: A quasi-experimental (pre- posttest) research study on (30) nurses who working in surgical oncology department, at Assiut University Hospital, and (60) randomly selected patients with cancer undergoing surgery divided equally in to two groups (study and control). Tools: Three tools were utilized; A structured self-administered questionnaire, observational check list and VTE risk factors assessment scale. Results: The mean score of total nurses' knowledge and practice significantly increased after the intervention nursing protocol. There was a statistically significant difference between both groups regarding venous thromboembolism risks and half of the studied patients had intermediate risk of VTE while two thirds had high risks post application of the nursing protocol. Conclusion: The implementation of the nursing protocol had a significant improvement on nurse’s knowledge and practice in addition to a significantly diminishing of thromboembolism risks among study than control group. Recommendation: Regularly updating and refreshing the nurses’ knowledge and practice are recommended through workshops to minimize the risks of VTE among the patients with cancer undergoing surgery.
