Quality of Life among Elderly Patients with Chronic Liver Diseases at Al-Rajhy Liver Hospital, Assiut University

Research Abstract

Abstract Background: Chronic liver diseases (CLDs) adversely affect the Quality of life since patients frequently have asthenia, incapacitation, pain in various body parts, a sleeping disorder, lack of appetite, insomnia, and complications related to liver cirrhosis. Study Aim: The study aimed to assess the Quality of life among elderly patients with CLDs at El Rajhy liver hospital. Design: This is a descriptive study conducted for this study. The study sample included 385 elderly patients with chronic liver diseases. Setting: The study was carried out in Al-Rajhy Liver Hospital, Assiut University, Egypt. Two tools were utilized; 1st tool: Structured Interview questionnaire include's personal characteristics and 2nd tool was: Chronic Liver Disease questionnaire (CLDQ) for assessing patients' Quality of life. Results: Around half of the studied sample had moderate impairment of QOL. There was a relationship between QOL & chronic liver diseases. It has a significant impact on the QOL for elderly patient. Conclusion: Chronic liver diseases have significant negative impact on the QOL among elderly patients in relation to abdominal symptoms, fatigue, systemic symptoms, activity and emotional function. Recommendations: Health educational programs should be initiated to increase knowledge among elderly patients about CLDs and its adverse effects on the elderly quality of life.

Assessment of Students' Knowledge and Attitudes Related to Physiological Changes of Elderly People in El-Azhar Univeristy at Assuit City, Egypt.

Research Abstract

The study aimed to assess the students' knowledge and attitudes related to physiological changes of elderly people in El-Azhar University at Assuit city, Egypt.

Design:

A descriptive research design was utilized.

Setting:

This study conducted in two faculties (Education and Shariaa and low) at El-azahr University. The total sample size was 363 female students who were selected by random sample from two faculties in El-Azhar University at Assuit City. Three tools were used, tool 1: Students' socio-demographic characteristic and education background questionnaire, tool II: facts on aging quiz 2 (FAQZ) and tool III: attitude toward old people scale (ATOP).

Results:

44.6% of students participants had fair knowledge, 70.2% of students participants had negative attitude, also there was a significant positive correlation between knowledge score and attitude score (r =0.114 & p = 0.029), and there was a significant positive correlation between their ages and knowledge score (r = 0.134& p = 0.011). Conclusion Majority of students had a fair score of knowledge related to physiological changes which occur to the elderly people however; the majority of them had a negative attitude toward elderly people.

Recommendation:

an educational program to raise the level of knowledge and attitude related to physiological changes of elderly people is needed.

Quality of life among elderly after retirement at assuit city

Research Abstract

Background: Retirement is one of the most important events in a series of interconnected critical situations interfering with the quality of life of the elderly. Study aim: To assessthe quality of life among the elderly after retirement at Assiut City. Design: A Cross-sectional Descriptive Study Design was utilized. Sample: The total sample size was 300 retired elderly employees attending the Geriatric club of Legitimacy Assembly and the Geriatric club of Islamic Cultural for Center. Study Tools: An interview questionnaire sheet that included two tools was used: Tool (1): The Socioeconomic Scale developed by (Abd eltawab scale 2012). Tool (2): The Older People’s Quality of life Questionnaire  (OPQOL). Results: It was found that 44.3% of the studied retired elderly aging between 60- 65 years. The mean age ± S.D was 65.53 ± 3.57. Regarding the gender difference of the studied sample, 62.3% of them were males. Regarding the total score of the Quality of life among the studied retired elderly, it was found that 34.7% of the studied sample had a low score of quality of life, while 38.7% of them had a moderate score and 26.6% of them had a high score. Conclusion: There is a statistically significant (positive-negative) correlation between age, sex, income of studied elderly and their total QOL. Recommendations: More studies should be implemented to assess public health awareness of the retired elderly for improving QOL and health education programs for the elderly at the age of retirement through workshops.

Effect of risk factors bronchial asthma on elderly health related quality of life at assiut university hospital, Egypt

Research Abstract

The present study aimed to assess quality of life of elderly asthmatics and to determine risk factors that may influence it. The study was carried out in the chest out-patient clinics and chest departments at Assiut University Hospital. The sample type of this study total coverage during one year consists of one hundred and five elderly people aged 60 years and above suffering from bronchial asthma disease. Two tools were used for data collection, tool one divided into three parts, socio-demographic data risk factors assessment, and history of bronchial asthma. Tool two to assessment health related quality of life of asthmatic patients was using St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). The main results yielded by the study proved that, there were highly significant differences between risk factors of bronchial asthma disease and health-related quality of life. The study recommended that further research be implemented to improve the effect of health related quality of life for asthmatic patients.

Knowledge and Reported Practice Among Elderly With Oral and Dental Problems at Assiut City, Egypt.

Research Abstract

Study aimed to assess oral health knowledge, and reported practices among elderly with oral and dental problems.

Design:

Descriptive research design was used.

Settings:

This study was conducted in dental out-patients clinics of the General Assiut Hospital & the El-Eman General Hospital Quota sample was used to select elderly; the total number of sample was 1300 elderly.

Tools:

Three tools were used. Tool I: structured interview form. It includes socio-demographic characteristics, medical and oral health history, Tool II: to assess elderly oral health knowledge, it includes 20 questions. Tool III: it includes three parts (reported practice about tooth brushing, reported practice about general oral health care and brief oral health status examination.

Results:

The main results of study showed that total percent of the studied elderly had unsatisfactory knowledge and the vast majority of the studied elderly had inadequate reported practice about tooth brushing. Also it was noticed that more than one third of elderly never clean their mouth, while more than half had unhealthy oral state.

Conclusion:

The total percent and the vast majority of the studied elderly had unsatisfactory knowledge about oral health and inadequate practice about tooth brushing respectively.

Recommendations:

Providing health education program to the elderly people about oral health to improve their knowledge and practice

Effect of Counseling Sessions as a Nursing Intervention on Depression and Loneliness among Elderly at Assiut City

Research Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of counseling sessions as nursing intervention on depression and loneliness among elderly. The study was carried out in the geriatric club in legitimate assembly and geriatric club in Cultural Center at Assiut City, Egypt. Impact of a designed educational program on elderly patients undergoing flexible bronchoscopy

Research Abstract

Bronchoscopy is a frequently required procedure in the elderly due to the high prevalence of pulmonary diseases. Bronchoscopy is associated with fears, stress, and anxiety. To evaluate the impact of an educational program on patient knowledge, anxiety level, difficulties, duration, and complications of bronchoscopy procedure in elderly patients. One hundred and fifty patients aged 60 years and older candidates for bronchoscopy were included. The patients were randomly divided into two equal groups: 75 patients received educational guideline (study group); 75 patients did not receive educational guideline (control group). Impact of Implementing Nursing Protocol on Respiratory Function of Elderly Patients' with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common respiratory disease interferes with basic function of breathing of elderly. Aim: To evaluate the impact of implementing nursing protocol on respiratory function of elderly patients' with COPD.
