Health Education program to improve the knowledge of Elderly Patients with Hip Fracture

Research Abstract

Hip fracture is a serious injury in older people and can contribute to their death or loss of independence. Aim Evaluate the effect of health education program on Improve the knowledge of elderly patients with hip fracture.

Research design:

Quasi-experimental study was conducted in orthopedic surgery department at Sohag University Hospital. Purposive sample, their number was 76; they divided into two group study and control equal number 38. Data was collected from September 2014 to September 2015.

Tools:

two tools were used in the present study; a structured interview questionnaire, tool (I): to assess personal characteristics Tool (II): assess patient's knowledge regarding hip fracture.

Results:

About two thirds of patients aged between 60 - 70 years, more than half of them were females, most common type of hip fracture was intertrochanteric fracture, and main cause of hip fracture is fall down. Also there is a statistical significant difference between study and control groups regarding to knowledge after implement of health educational program.

Conclusion:

There is a statistical significant difference between study and control groups regarding knowledge after implement of health educational program. Recommendations Expanded health education about the problem for elders at Sohag through home visits.

Effect of Nursing Teaching Program on Awareness and Adherence among Patients with Chronic Heart Failure Disease

Research Abstract

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a major health care problem not only for patients but for their family and also for society, as it significantly contributes to the large costs associated with the care of CHF patients (Ghali,et al. 2016).

Aim:

to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing teaching program on awareness and adherence among patients with chronic heart failure.

Setting:

the study was carried out in the internal medicine departments and cardiac outpatient clinics at Assiut University Hospital.

Samples:

Total coverage sample of older adult patient include (100 patients), from both sex their age ranged from (55-75) year.

Tools:

three tools were used for data collection of this study; patient interviewing sheet, Atlanta heart failure knowledge test (Carolyn et al., 2009), and Adherence questionnaire.

Efficacy of Posture Awareness and Neck Exercise Program on Reducing Cervical Pain Among Elderly Patients at Assiut University Hospital, Egypt

Research Abstract

Cervical pain is a common condition in the elderly population. It affects the physical health status in persons over 65 years and interferes with their daily activities.

Study Aim:

Evaluate the efficacy of posture awareness and neck exercise program on reducing cervical pain among elderly patients.

Subject & method:

Quasi-experimental research design was used. The study was conducted in outpatient clinic of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Department at Assiut University Hospital. The total sample size was 189 elderly. Two tools were used. The 1st tool: An interview sheet including personal characteristics, medical history and elderly knowledge, the 2nd tool: The Northwick Park Neck Pain scale and jury were done by 3 expertise in erotological nursing.

Results:

The present study showed that the majority of studied patients aged (60 - < 65) years, with mean age 62.48± 3.43 and there was a highly significant difference between pre and post-program of both isometric neck exercises and good neck posture (p=0.0001).

Conclusion:

It was concluded that isometric neck exercises and good neck posture are effective in the management of neck pain in elderly population.

Recommendation:

Implementation of isometric exercise and good neck posture among elderly population should be expanded as a community based intervention.

Assessment of Respiratory Functions among the Elderly with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease on their Knowledge and Practice at the Main University Hospital in Assuit City

Research Abstract

Background:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common lung disease that interferes with basic functions of elderly breathing.

Aim:

to assess the respiratory functions among the elderly with COPD on the irk now ledge and practice.

Subjects and methods:

Descriptive cross sectional research design was used to conduct this study in Chest Departments at the Main Assuit University Hospital. Purposive sample of 169COPD elderly was participated. Three tools were used includes: 1st tool: Elderly assessment sheet, it includes two parts (Socio-demographic& health history and Bristol COPD knowledge assessment sheet), 2nd tool: Observational checklists used to assess the practice of elderly: (breathing & coughing exercise, inhaler technique) and 3rd tool: Respiratory functions assessment sheet used to evaluate the (dyspnea grade, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and peak flow meter).

Results:

The main age of studied sample 65.50±5.16 (60-78), 73.4% were male and 70.4% were smokers. The vast majority of studied sample had poor knowledge & practice with impaired in respiratory functions.

Conclusion:

Vast majority of the studied elderly had poor knowledge & practice which had negative impact on respiratory functions.

Recommendations:

Health education program for elderly with COPD to improve their knowledge & practice and respiratory functions is very essential to manage their disease.

Prevalence of Disabilities among Elderly in rural area at Assiut district, Egypt

Research Abstract

Abstract Background: In Egypt; Elderly populations are at higher risk than adult population for health problems and disability increase with increasing age. The study aimed to identify prevalence rate of disability among elderly at Assiut district. Subject and methods: cross sectional research design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted in three randomly selected villages namely (Al-Shaghaba, Elwan and Awlad Ibrahim) at Assiut district. The total sample size was 1000 elderly after conducting home visit from the previous setting who were selected by convenient sample. Two tools were used ,The 1st tool: A structured interview questionnaire sheet which included socio-demographic and medical data, The 2nd tool: A questionnaire that assessed the levels of various disabilities among elderly people by Clifton Assessment Procedure for the Elderly and scale to asses activity of daily living. Results: (34.7%) of studied elderly had mild impairment. While the mean ± SD score of activity of daily living was 4.87 ± 1.89 Conclusion There was a positive correlation between elderly age and Clifton assessment procedures while a negative correlation was found between elderly age and Activity of Daily Living and the main percent of the studied elderly had mild impairment. Recommendation: Provide individualized education for elderly and their families to improve their knowledge about disability problems of elderly people.
