Vildagliptin ameliorates intrapulmonary vasodilatation and angiogenesis in chronic common bile duct ligation-induced hepatopulmonary syndrome in rat

Research Abstract

Experimental hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is best reproduced in the rat common bile duct ligation (CBDL) model. Vildagliptin (Vild) is an anti-hyperglycemic drug that exerts beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-fibrotic effects. Therefore, the present search aimed to explore the possible effectiveness of Vild in CBDL-induced HPS model.

Methods

Four groups of male Wistar rats which weigh 220–270 g were used, including the normal control group, the sham control group, the CBDL group and CBDL+Vild group. The first three groups received i.p. saline, while the last group was treated with i.p. Vild (10 mg/kg/day) from the 15th to 28th day of the experiment.

Results

CBDL decreased the survivability and body weight of rats, increased diameter of the pulmonary vessels, and altered the arterial blood gases and the liver function parameters. Additionally, it increased the pulmonary …

Impact of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the behavior and stress indicators of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) exposed to heat stress

Research Abstract

This study was designed to assess the role of nano-zinc oxide in mitigating the deleterious effects of heat stress in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) by evaluating parameters such as aggressive behavior (biting frequency and chasing duration), hematological indicators, and stress-related biochemical markers. A total of 96 catfish were divided into four distinct groups (24 fish/group): The first group (CON) served as the control group, receiving a diet free of nano-zinc oxide. The second group (HS) was exposed to heat stress at 35 °C±1 °C. The third group (ZN) was fed a diet containing nano-zinc oxide at 30 mg/kg of the diet, and the fourth group (ZHN) was exposed to heat stress (35 °C±1 °C) and fed a diet containing nano-zinc oxide at 30 mg/kg of the diet. The results clarified that the aggressive behavior and cortisol levels were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the HS group compared to the CON and ZHN groups. Additionally, the level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was significantly lower (P<0.05) in the HS group compared to the CON and ZHN groups. Meanwhile, a significant (P<0.05) decrease in red blood cells, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cells, alkaline phosphatase, and lymphocytes, was observed in fish belonging to the HS group, while the levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, neutrophils, and monocytes showed a significant increase (P<0.05). Supplementation with nano-zinc oxide significantly recovered most hematological and biochemical parameters. In conclusion, nano-zinc oxide contributed significantly to the regulation of the negative impacts of heat stress on fish by reducing aggressive behavior and cortisol levels. Additionally, it improved the levels of AChE and certain hematological and biochemical parameters.

The Aesthetic and Functional Outcome of Monsplasty in Women Experienced Abdominoplasty

Research Abstract

Background & aim: One of the most popular procedures for body sculpting is still abdominoplasty, for which many new surgical techniques are released every year. But the region beneath the abdomen has received little attention. Consequently, patients who have a body lift or abdominoplasty without a corresponding monsplasty frequently report discomfort with function and appearance, especially in the pubic region. The purpose of this prospective study was to assess the cosmetic and functional effects of monsplasty in female patients who had undergone abdominoplasty.

Patients& methods: between September 2021 and December 2023 At the plastic surgery department Assiut University, A total of 30 women who were candidate for abdominoplasty associated with mons deformity were included in this study from the. Those women were randomly subdivided into 2 groups; traditional abdominoplasty or liposuction-assisted abdominoplasty without monsplasty (group A) and with monsplasty (group B) - mons lift as a technique of monsplasty- to compare the female genital self-image, degree of mons deformity and measurements of mons region between both groups.

We performed traditional (classical)abdominoplasty- abdominoplasty with the classical horizontal incision excluding extended and belt abdominal lipectomy- .

Results: The main findings of the study included:  Both groups showed no significant differences regarding baseline and perioperative data. The operative duration was not significantly different between the two groups. There was a significant postoperative reduction in the various measurements during follow-up, with the exception of the length of the labia majora in (group B). Additionally, there was a significant improvement in the degree of mons ptosis deformity after surgery in (group B). The Female Genital Self-Image Scale showed significant improvement in (group B).

Conclusion: Monsplasty reduces discomfort in the pubic area and positively impacts body image, self-esteem, and sexual experience.
