South Egypt Cancer Institute

History:

The idea of establishing the institute began in 1990 when it was noticed that the percentage of cases of oncology patients increased significantly.

In 1991, the idea of allocating the hospital's headquarters as a nucleus for the establishment of the South Egypt Cancer Institute emerged due to the need for this large area to provide this advanced service for the people of Upper Egypt, from Beni Suef Governorate in the north to Aswan in the south.

In the same year, the Board of Directors of Assiut University Hospitals approved the allocation of the old university hospital building as the headquarters of the Oncology Hospital.

Work began at this time in the units of bladder tumors and pediatric oncology, and the Institute was part of the university hospital and under the supervision of the Faculty of Medicine of Assiut and did not have an independent entity and continued as well until 1994 and then was thinking again to establish an independent Institute of

Oncology in Upper Egypt has been met with many financial and administrative difficulties.

Assiut University undertakes housing-related initiatives to support its university community and improve residential facilities through the provision of administrative housing, the allocation of available residential units, and the development of housing infrastructure and services. These initiatives are coordinated through the University’s Community Service and Environmental Development Sector and the relevant administrative housing units.

During the 2025/2026 academic year, the University documented the following relevant initiatives:

1. Provision of Residential Accommodation

On 15 November 2025, Assiut University announced the availability of 15 vacant residential units within its administrative housing facilities, located both inside and outside the university campus. Applications opened on 16 November 2025 for a period of 15 days. The initiative aimed to meet the accommodation needs of faculty members, improve the utilization of university-owned residential properties, and promote a stable working and living environment. The allocation process was governed by established regulations and procedures intended to ensure transparency and fairness.

2. Development of Residential Infrastructure and Services

On 3 June 2026, the University’s Administrative Housing Board discussed measures to improve residential facilities and the services provided to occupants. The agenda included infrastructure improvements, maintenance of internal and connecting roads, enhancement of residential amenities, and measures to strengthen safety and organization within university housing areas. These activities demonstrate the University’s continued attention to residential planning, infrastructure quality, and the needs of its residential community.

3. Cooperation with Local Urban Development Authorities

The University has an established record of cooperation with the New Assiut City Development Authority and the New Urban Communities Authority on housing and urban development initiatives. Previous documented projects included plans for residential buildings for university employees and faculty members, student accommodation in New Assiut City, and housing arrangements supported by transportation services.

These initiatives provide historical evidence of institutional engagement with urban development authorities. However, they should be distinguished from activities newly implemented during the 2025/2026 academic year.

Contribution to Sustainable Development

Assiut University’s documented housing initiatives are relevant to Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), particularly the objective of improving access to adequate and safe housing and supporting sustainable urban development. They also contribute to employee welfare and the development of residential infrastructure.

Nevertheless, the available evidence primarily concerns accommodation for university employees and faculty members, together with the maintenance and development of university residential facilities. It does not independently establish that the University worked with local authorities during the reporting period to expand access to affordable housing for the general local population.

Conclusion

The available documentation demonstrates that Assiut University addressed residential accommodation and housing development through the allocation of university housing units and initiatives to improve residential infrastructure and services during the 2025/2026 academic year. The University also has a documented history of cooperation with urban development authorities on housing-related projects.

11.4.1The University's sustainable commuting approach

SDG11
Details:

11.4.1The University's sustainable commuting approach | International Academic Ranking Office

11.4.1The University's sustainable commuting approach?

Does your university as a body measure and set targets for more sustainable commuting (walking, cycling or other non-motorized transport, vanpools, carpools, shuttle bus or public transportation, motorcycle, scooter or moped, or electric vehicles)?

Yes, Assiut University tracks and sets targets to promote sustainable commuting options such as walking, cycling, shared transport, and electric vehicles.

(A)Assiut University announces the possibility of transporting students to and from the university.

The university provides many means of transportation (courses using buses - Taftaf to transport students from the gates to their colleges - minibuses, etc.) for its faculty members and employees to provide comfort, which helps to adhere to the dates of attendance and departure. It facilitates the process of transportation to and from the university through periodic subscriptions and service convoys such as medical, veterinary, and comprehensive development convoys and scientific and research trips for its students.

Taftaf has been used inside the campus of Assiut University for students and citizens who frequent the university since 2015, after the issuance of the university president's decision not to enter taxis inside the campus. The students expressed their happiness with the start of the "Al-Taftaf" vehicles, which contributed to saving time and wasted effort in moving from the gates to inside the university's faculties, especially the distant ones. The university administration is working to overcome the obstacles facing students within the university and to provide them with all necessary care and support.

The technology transfer unit at the university has manufactured two vehicles and delivered them to the university, and it is worth noting that each vehicle consists of two cars with a capacity of 36 passengers. One of them specializes in transporting visitors to the campus from the university gate facing Library Street, and the other works from the university gate adjacent to the Ibrahimi Canal to circumnavigate the university for a symbolic fee per person.

Description:

Regarding environmental conservation, Assiut University has launched an initiative to encourage the use of bicycles and electric vehicles, as part of the work of the Community Service and Environmental Development Committee. Within the same framework, several electric charging units have been established within the university campus.

The university encourages employees and students to use bicycles as a means of transportation to and from the university, as it provides them with places to keep bicycles, and it also provides special sidewalks prepared for pedestrians. The university has also recently been keen to provide entrances and sidewalks prepared for people with special needs to use easily to move around the university campus, as well as to move between the corridors and college buildings.

Regarding environmental conservation, Assiut University launched an initiative to encourage the use of bicycles and electric vehicles, as part of the work of the Community Service and Environmental Development Committee. Within this framework, it established several electric charging units on campus.

Therefore, the university has identified ways to encourage the use of bicycles on campus.

- Providing safe bicycle paths: Establishing dedicated bicycle paths on campus to facilitate mobility and ensure safety for users.

- Providing bicycle parking: Establishing safe and shaded bicycle parking spaces in strategic locations on campus.

- Organizing sporting events: Organizing special cycling events, such as races or hiking trails, on specific days to encourage students and faculty to use them.

- Providing bicycle rental options: Providing a nominal or free bicycle rental service on campus.

- Providing incentives: Offering discounts or benefits to students and faculty who regularly use bicycles, such as reduced dorm fees or other services.

- Raising awareness of the benefits of using bicycles: Educating students and faculty about the health and environmental benefits of bicycles, such as reducing pollution, preserving the environment, and improving their health.
