Burden and coping strategies among caregivers of mood disorder patients

Research Abstract
Introduction: Caregiving is a dynamic process which includes patient and a person who is involved in long term care of the patient. This long term care very often leads to experience of burden in the caregivers. It is important to understand caregiver’s coping strategies for tackling burden. Aim: The study aimed to investigate burden and coping strategies among caregivers of mood disorder patients and examine the relationship between burden and coping strategies among them. Design: A descriptive design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was carried out at inpatient unit at neuropsychiatry and neurosurgical hospital at Assiut University. Sample: The sample comprised of 100 caregivers of mood patients. Tools: Tools of study comprised of personal data questionnaire, mood disorder burden index (MDBI) and ways of coping questionnaire. Results: The highest mean scores of burden of exhibited specific behaviors by patients were related to sleeping too much (2.45 ± 1.52), that patients said there were too many thoughts running through their head (2.05 ± 1.51) and they were more talkative than usual (2.05 ± 1.51). Also, the highest mean scores of the caregivers' burden (Bother or upset) were related to sleeping too much (2.25 ± 1.15), caregivers felt that patients had withdrawn from them (2.10 ± 1.01), caregivers felt that efforts to be helpful to patient when patient was having mood problems were rejected (2.06 ± 1.05) and caregiver felt a loss of companionship or closeness with patient as a result of patient’s mood disorder (2.03 ± 1.20). Regarding coping strategies, the highest mean scores were related to self-controlling (9.89 ± 4.01), positive reappraisal (9.42 ± 3.90) and seeking social support (9.25 ± 4.43) respectively. Self-controlling, planful problem solving and positive reappraisal were positively and significantly correlated with frequency of exhibited specific behaviors by patients (r=0.311, 0.363, &0.245 with p-value = 0.002, 0.000 & 0.014) respectively and caregivers' bother or upset (r= 0.261, 0.416 &0.252 with p-value = 0.009, 0.000 &0.011) respectively. Conclusion: Caregivers of patients with mood disorder experienced high mean scores of burden related to the frequency of symptoms exhibited by patients and caregivers' bother or upset. The highest mean scores of coping strategies utilized by them were related to self-controlling, positive reappraisal and seeking social support. Self-controlling, planful problem solving and positive reappraisal were positively and significantly correlated with some of exhibited specific behaviors by patients and caregivers' bother or upset. Recommendations: Designing and implementing psychoeducational programs are essential for caregivers of patients with mood disorders to provide them stress management skills and healthy coping strategies.

Undergraduate nursing students’ knowledge and attitude regarding pain management of children in Upper Egypt

Research Abstract
Pain assessment and management require nurses to be equipped with adequate knowledge and proper attitudes. This research aimed to assess undergraduate nursing students’ knowledge and attitude regarding pain management in children. Descriptive cross-sectional research design was utilized. This work was implemented at Faculty of Nursing in Assiut University. The study subjects consisted of convenient sample of undergraduate nursing students at third and fourth year during the academic year 2015-2016. One tool was used for this study consisted of two parts: part I: Demographic questionnaire, and part II: Pediatric Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (PNKAS). Fifty-six percent of undergraduate nursing students had unsatisfactory score regarding PNKAS. The highest percentage 76.2% of participating students had less than 50% of total score of knowledge and attitude regarding pain especially to pharmacological information. The study concluded that nursing students had poor knowledge and attitude regarding pain management by using PNKAS especially in the part of pain assessment and pharmacological pain management. The more contact with pediatric patients the higher the knowledge and positive attitudes among undergraduate nursing students. The study recommended that the pediatric staff should review the curriculum to enrich more about assessment and management of pain.

Effect of Nutrition Education Program on Morbidity from Acute
Respiratory Tract Infections (ALRTI) among Under Five Years in
Assiut City

Research Abstract
The effect of nutrition education program on morbidity from acute respiratory infection among less than 5 years children was investigated .The study was carried out in primary health care center and the houses in its catchment area in west of Assiut City. It consisted of cross -sectional morbidity and anthropometric survey followed by a longitudinal intervention study for one year.21.2 % of children under five was stunted and 8.8 % were wasted. There was considerable chronic malnutrition among studied children. OveraU, I 1.6 % of children under age of five were underweight for age .The results of multiple logistic regression showed that low socioeconomic level and increased birth order were associated significantly with stunting, underweight and wasting .Incidence of ALRTI was 10.4 %. 26.9 % of children who contracted ALRTI diseased this difference were statistically significant. on the other hand 23 .1 % were wasted versus to 7.1 % of non diseased (P~ 0.017) . 26.9 % of them were stunted as compared to 20.5 % and this difference was statistically insignificant (P~ 0.298). The analysis of the data of anthropometric measurements showed insignificant differences in the prevalence trends of stunting by time. On the other hand, there was significant .in the trends of total prevalence of underweight. As regards wasting, there was significant decrease in the trend of total prevalence of wasting. The study recommended; nutritional interventions through health education that should be integrated with maternal and child health activities
