COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF CONTRACAECUM SPP. LARVAE INFECTING NILE TILAPIA IN ASSIUT GOVERNORATE: OCCURRENCE, MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATING THE IN VITRO NEMATICIDAL ACTIVITY OF SOFT CORAL EXTRACTS

Research Abstract

ABSTRACT
Contracaecum spp., a member of the Anisakidae family, presents significant challenges to both the marketability of fish and public health due to its zoonotic potential. This study explores the prevalence and seasonal variation of Contracaecum larvae in 100 randomly collected samples of Nile tilapia from Assiut Governorate, Egypt. Detailed microscopic and ultrastructural examinations were conducted, which were further supplemented by molecular sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Our findings revealed an overall prevalence rate of 24%, with a notably high correlation between Contracaecum infection and the summer season, showing an infection rate of 50%. Molecular analysis identified Contracaecum multipapillatum as the dominant species in the region. Additionally, we explored the effectiveness of marine extracts-specifically Sarcophyton and Dendronephthya-as alternatives to conventional anthelmintics. In vitro assessments demonstrated that these extracts were highly effective in altering larval morphology and reducing viability in a time-dose dependent manner, with IC₅₀ values of 12.52 mg/mL for Sarcophyton and 14.25 mg/mL for Dendronephthya. Treatment led to significant morphological changes observed through scanning electron microscopy, including severe cuticular damage and edema, as well as destruction at both the anterior and posterior ends. This study highlights the impact of Contracaecum larvae on fish in Assiut and presents promising marine-derived anthelmintic properties.

Diagnostic performance and quantitative characterization of PET/computed tomography in peritoneal deposits assessment

Research Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the diagnostic utility of fluoro-deoxy glucose [FDG PET/computed tomography (CT)] in assessing peritoneal deposits and to establish optimal quantitative metabolic thresholds for differentiating malignant from benign involvement, comparing it with conventional CT.
Method:
A total of 202 patients who had been identified with various types of malignant tumors and who were suspected or confirmed to have peritoneal deposits underwent whole-body FDG PET/CT. Qualitative assessment and quantitative metabolic parameters, including standardized uptake value (SUV max, SUV mean, and SUV peak), metabolic tumor volume, and total lesion glycolysis, were evaluated. Results were validated against histopathology or clinical/radiological follow-up. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis determined the discriminative power and optimal cut-off values.

Hydrogen cyanamide poisoning: multiple microscopic analyses evidence of forensic entomotoxicology succession on decomposing covered/uncovered rat carrions

Research Abstract
Background
Forensic entomotoxicology is a crucial field that studies the effects of drugs and poisons on carrion-feeding insects, particularly in crime investigations. Hydrogen cyanamide, a plant growth regulator, is hazardous and used in agriculture but is limited in some countries due to its high cost and severe toxicity. The terrestrial isopod Porcellio laevis plays a vital role in soil ecosystems and biosystem management. Accordingly, authors aimed to examine the impact of hydrogen cyanamide toxicity on arthropods, specifically Porcellio laevis, Musca domestica (House flies), and Sarcophaga sp. (Flesh flies) visiting decomposing covered/uncovered rat carrions, which could be relevant in forensic investigations. A total of 20 rats were divided into two control (I and II, covered/uncovered) and two treated groups (III and IV, covered/uncovered, euthanized using hydrogen cyanamide). Arthropods were gathered bi-daily …

Do we need a small catheter drainage with chest tube after uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for better drainage?

Research Abstract
Materials and Methods: It represents a pilot prospective study randomized trial from August 2019 to August 2020 who had undergone uniportal VATS procedures were divided into two groups as group A (chest tube with small catheter) and group B (chest tube only).
Results: Fifty-three patients underwent uniportal VATS only 30 where eligible to the study divided into two equal groups (18 males, 12 females). The mean age of patients in the small catheter with chest tube was 42.07±12.85 years, compared to 34.93±10.73 years in the chest tube only. Six different types of operation was done. Postoperative pain and hospital stays was nearly equal in both groups (p> 0.05). Postoperative residual effusion in immediate chest x-ray in small catheter with chest tube was managed by aspiration from small catheter and show improvement in follow up chest x-ray next morning (p< 0.05) but in chest tube only was management conservatively didn’t show improvement in follow up chest x-ray next morning (p> 0.05).
Conclusions: Small catheter with chest tube didn’t add more pain. Although more than half of the cases get aspiration from small catheter and show improvement in follow up chest x-ray next morning, this does not statically affect hospital stay.

Comparative study of aortic root replacement versus aortic root enlargement in small aortic root

Research Abstract
For patients with aortic stenosis (AS) and small annulus, aortic root replacement (RR) and aortic root enlargement (RE) are proven methods to prevent prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM). Our goal was to compare the results of those two categories of operations. This prospective study used our hospitals’ database of aortic valve replacements from 2021 to 2024. Patients who had aortic stenosis treated with RE or RR were compared. The postoperative results and reoperations were compared. Kaplan–Meier survival estimation and log-rank test were used to compare time-to-event data.
Results
A total of 72 patients had aortic stenosis treated with either RE or RR. Thirty-eight (52%) and 34 (47%) patients underwent RR and RE, respectively. In RR cases, significant postoperative bleeding was noted in 13 patients vs. only 4 patients in RE group (P-value = 0.001). The length of stay did not differ …
