Radiographic Correlation In Bilateral Impacted Lower Third Molars: A Retrospective CBCT Based Study

Research Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to assess the CBCT based radiographic correlation in bilateral impacted lower third molars so that, if correlated, data available for one side can aid in surgical planning for the other side or justifies the need for additional imaging.

Subjects & methods: DICOM files of 50 cases with bilateral impacted third molar were retrieved and both sides were compared according to four parameters.

Results: Results revealed statistically significant positive correlation between right and left sides regarding impaction angulation, number of roots, and crown caries. Weak correlation was found regarding inferior alveolar canal approximation.

Conclusion: Multicentric larger sample size study with detailed investigations is recommended.

IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL EXPRESSION OF CD44 AND DNA ANALYSIS IN ORAL PREMALIGNANT AND MALIGNANT LESIONS

Research Abstract

Objectives: The aim of the present study is to evaluate CD44 expression to detect cancer stem cell activity along with analyzing the DNA ploidy, to predict the activity of oral carcinogenesis.

Materials and method: Forty formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues of oral lesions were used and divided equally into 4 groups; different premalignant white lesions, well, moderate, and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas. All specimens were immunostained using CD44 antibodies. Moreover, the same paraffin blocks for each case used to prove the differentiation in DNA ploidy between groups using flow cytometer.

Results: The CD44 immunoexpression showed a marked statistical significant difference between premalignant white lesions and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas. Flow cytometric analysis of DNA parameters between the tested groups revealed a powerful difference of DNA ploidy between the premalignant group and other malignant groups. The S-phase fraction showed significant difference between poorly differentiated OSCC and premalignant lesions with no effective differences between the malignant lesions.

Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest that the CD44 immunoexpression collaborates with the DNA content analysis presented a real indicator in prediction the behavior of oral premalignant and malignant lesions.

Collagen membrane and L-PRF with Xenogeneic bone block for vertical ridge augmentation: An Experimental study in a canine model

Research Abstract

Background: Guided bone regeneration has been tried using a variety of barrier membranes, and it is thought to be achieved when osteoprogenitor cells are allowed to repopulate the area of the bone defect solely while non-osteogenic tissues are prevented from entering. PRF, have the advantage that without anticoagulants, a fibrin matrix that incorporates the full set of growth factors trapped within its matrix can slowly release these growth factors over time. Furthermore, L-PRF contains white blood cells, which are key contributors to wound healing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of using L-PRF in bone regeneration when utilizing GBR technique. Methods: The study involved six mature mongrel dogs, each weighing at least 18 kg. In the first phase, four standardized saddle-type defects were prepared. After a two-month recuperation period, a xenogeneic block graft was utilized in the two groups. In group (1), block graft was covered by a collagen membrane (Block + C M), while in group (2), two L-PRF membranes were added first before top coverage by collagen membrane (Block + L PRF + C M). Animals were subjected to surgical reentry after a three-month healing period following grafting for clinical observation and then euthanized for histological processing. Results: In group 1, there was a statistically significant difference between (New bone apical side) and each of (New bone periosteum side) and (New bone intermediate) (p≤0.001). In group 2 no statistically significant difference between (New bone periosteum side), (New Bone intermediate) and (New Bone apical side) (p=0.225). Conclusion: With the inherent limitations of this study, the usage of the (L PRF) in ridge augmentation appears to enhance the quality of regenerated bone
