Collocations Involving the Word /?allaah/ ‘God’ in Modern Standard Arabic: A Corpus-Based Study.

Research Abstract
This paper informs about a corpus-based study of the collocations including the word for God in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The study attempts to answer three questions: (a) What are the collocations including the word /?allaah/ ‘God’ in MSA? (b) How many are such collocations and which are the most frequent of them, and (c) How can these collocations be classified syntactically and semantically? It depends on the online corpus collected by Al-Sulaiti (2006) and the concordance program prepared by Roberts (2004). It starts with a brief introduction to collocations in Arabic and corpus studies. Then, it shows how Arabic collocations have been classified in the literature. Section (3) explains the study aim and technique. Section (4) presents an analysis of the results of the study by discussing the various syntactic and semantic categories of collocations found in the corpus. The results of this study can be useful in the fields of translation, lexicography and language pedagogy.

Syntactic Classes of the Arabic Passive Participle
And How they Should be Rendered into English

Research Abstract
The main concern of this article is to provide an analysis of the syntactic classes of Arabic passive participle forms and discuss their translations based on a comparative study of two English Quranic translations by Ali (1934) and Pickthall (1930). The study attempts to answer two questions: (a) Should we translate the Arabic passive participle into an English nominal, verbal, adjectival or adverbial? and (b) What are the factors that determine the choice of one translation or the other? So, it compares the two translations to analyze the different English translations of the Arabic passive participle. A corpus of 350 sentences has been randomly selected from the source text, together with their 700 translations in the target texts. The two translations of all the sentences are compared and analyzed in terms of syntactic and semantic features. The various English translations of the Arabic passive participle forms are presented with a count of the examples representing them in the corpus and their percentages. Then, the contextual reference of each translation is studied and accounted for.

An Extended Systemic Cohesive Approach to the Analysis of Cohesion in the Quranic Text

Research Abstract
This text-linguistic study aims at analyzing the lexicogrammatical, semantic and semiotic cohesion in one of the Quranic chapters, namely /?an-naba?/ 'the news'. It applies Jin Soon Cha's (1985) Extended Systemic Cohesive Model to the analysis of cohesion in that Quranic chapter to see how far that model is helpful in explaining cohesion in the Holy Quran. Section (1) introduces the cohesive model that will be applied. Section (2) applies the lexicogrammatical, semantic and semiotic components of the model to the selected chapter. Section (3) summarizes the main findings of the study.

Rhetorical Strategies in Barack Obama’s
Cairo Speech: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Research Abstract
This discourse analytical study aims at analyzing the rhetorical strategies employed by Barack Obama in his Cairo speech. It applies Zheng’s (2000) approach to the analysis of the political discourse of that speech. The author aims to answer two questions: a) What are the rhetorical strategies that Barack Obama used in his Cairo speech? and b) Is Zheng’s (2000) model sufficient for analyzing political discourse? The article is divided into five sections. The first section offers a theoretical background on critical discourse analysis. Section (2) introduces the model that will be applied. Section (3) exposes the study aim and technique. Section (4) applies the rhetorical framework to the selected speech. The last section summarizes the main findings of the study.

Ideological Strategies in Barack Obama’s Cairo Speech: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Research Abstract
This discourse analytical study attempts to explore the ideological strategies employed by Barack Obama in his Cairo speech. It applies Van Dijk’s (2006) model to the analysis of political discourse in that speech to uncover the ideologies hidden in it. The article is divided into five sections. The first section offers a theoretical background on critical discourse analysis. Section (2) introduces the approach that will be applied. Section (3) displays the study aim and technique. Section (4) applies the ideological framework to the chosen speech. The last section summarizes the main findings of the study. The study reveals that Obama uses a wide range of strategies and techniques in his speech to achieve his political objectives. These strategies unconsciously reflect his ideological agenda. He adopts two major ideological strategies: positive self-presentation and negative other-presentation. The study explains the discursive tactics which he employs to create that ideological polarization represented in ‘Us’ vs. ‘Them.’
