Written by: Dr. Hind Hassanein

Under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, University President, Dr. Gamal Badr, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Magdy Alwan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Dr. Sameh Fekry, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Yasser Gomaa, Professor of Linguistics and Translation in the English Department at the Faculty of Arts, participated in a remarkable scientific achievement represented in the publication of an outstanding international research contribution in the International Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (3rd edition, 2026) issued by the global publishing house Elsevier, one of the most prestigious academic publishers in the world. This scientific achievement represents a significant step in the field of linguistic research, as the encyclopedia is a leading platform that brings together the latest knowledge and theories in language sciences and serves as a key reference for researchers, students, and academics worldwide.

This participation came as part of a highly selective scientific choice limited to only five Arab researchers worldwide, to contribute to one of the largest reference encyclopedias in linguistic studies, which includes about 28,100 scholarly chapters prepared by a distinguished group of leading international specialists. The chapter was titled

Arabic–English Machine Translation: Technical Advances, Linguistic Challenges, and Cultural Dimension

This chapter addresses the latest technological developments in the field of machine translation between Arabic and English, with a thorough scientific examination of the linguistic challenges related to the structure of the Arabic language, semantics, and pragmatic context. It also includes an analysis of the cultural dimension and its impact on the efficiency and quality of machine translation systems, supporting knowledge accessibility, digital transformation, and human capacity building.

In a special statement, Dr. Yasser Jomaa expressed his pride in this achievement, emphasizing that language is not just a tool for communication but a means to build more inclusive and just societies. Through this work, we aim to highlight the vital role of linguistic studies in supporting sustainable development and enhancing cultural identity.

Meanwhile, Dr. Magdy Alwan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, praised this contribution, noting that it reflects the faculty's commitment to supporting researchers and enabling them to contribute to human knowledge in a vision aligned with contemporary needs and national and international development goals. He also affirmed that Elsevier is considered one of the leading academic publishers in the world, and its resources are regarded as a gold standard in many scientific and humanities disciplines, making this contribution a valuable addition to the academic record of both the university and the college alike.
