As part of the Institute’s commitment to community engagement—facilitating visits and events for the children receiving care there—Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Magd, Dean of the South Egypt Cancer Institute, welcomed a visiting delegation from the American organization "TC Egypt."

The delegation distributed gifts as part of a wonderful initiative aimed at bringing joy to the children and boosting their morale.

The South Egypt Cancer Institute at Assiut University welcomed community delegations from the Catholic Church, who organized recreational activities to support pediatric oncology patients and bring them joy.

These events are part of the Institute's efforts to provide comprehensive psychological support alongside medical treatment.

The celebration featured a variety of activities, including face painting, fun group games, and the distribution of gifts and toys to bring smiles and happiness to the children.

Summer training has commenced for students from the Faculty of Biotechnology and the Faculty of Technology and Applied Health Sciences at Badr University in Assiut, taking place in the Clinical Pathology Department at the South Egypt Cancer Institute.

The South Egypt Cancer Institute at Assiut University hosted a series of evaluation tours and visits by quality and accreditation delegations. These visits were conducted in preparation for achieving full compliance with the standards of the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR).

The regulatory delegation's visits focused on assessing the medical facilities' infrastructure, the quality of diagnostic and therapeutic systems, the safety of the work environment and patient safety, and the implementation of GAHAR’s internationally recognized national healthcare standards.

In a new achievement added to Assiut University’s record of success, the South Egypt Cancer Institute hosted an assessment team from the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) on Sunday and Monday, July 5–6, 2026. The visit aimed to renew the accreditation of the Blood Transfusion and Derivatives Center Laboratory—part of the Clinical Pathology Department laboratories—in accordance with the requirements of the international standard ISO 15189:2022 regarding the quality and competence of medical laboratories.

The assessment team included:

- Eng. Mohamed Adel Rizk – Assessment Team Leader.

- Dr. Hossam El-Sayed Abdullah – Technical Assessor.

- Dr. Walaa Mohamed Kandil – Director of the Medical Laboratories Department at the Egyptian Accreditation Council.

Impact of 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography on management and clinical outcomes in patients with failed back surgery syndrome

Research Abstract

Fifty-four patients (mean age: 51.02 ± 10.59 years) were enrolled. SPECT/CT demonstrated significantly higher detection rates of pain generators compared to planar imaging (96.3% vs. 83.3%, p = 0.001). Cases with high tracer uptake showed significantly more frequent combined screw and facet joint involvement (65.5%, p ≤ 0.001). SPECT/CT findings modified management in 66.7% of the patients studied. Significant progressive improvements were observed in both VAS scores (from 2.98 ± 0.14) and ODI scores (from 49.2 ± 7.8) pre-intervention to (1.10 ± 0.46, p < 0.001) and (20.56 ± 5, p < 0.001), respectively, in the 6th month post-intervention. Intensity of tracer uptake on SPECT/CT was a significant independent predictor for both pain improvement (OR = 2.10, 95% CI [1.22–3.63], p = 0.007) and disability reduction (OR = 2.08, 95% CI [1.23–3.52], p = 0.006).

Vitamin D3 Supplementation Modulates C-MYC/VEGF and Improves Chemotherapy Outcomes in Metastatic CRC Patients: Integrated Clinical–Mechanistic Evidence

Research Abstract

Objective: Systemic chemotherapy with fluoropyrimidine regimens is the cornerstone of management for
unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and potential
molecular mechanisms of adding vitamin D3 supplementation to fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy in metastatic
CRC patients. Methods: This study evaluated the clinical effects of vitamin D3 addition to fluoropyrimidine therapy.
Serum vitamin D3 levels and expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cellular myelocytomatosis
(C-Myc) were determined at baseline and after two months of therapy. Clinical endpoints such as overall response
rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were assessed. Results: Patients supplemented
with vitamin D3 had a significant rise in the median vitamin D3 levels after two months (8 (6–14) to 13.5 (8–16.3)
ng/mL; Δ +5.5 (3–8); Wilcoxon p<0.001), whereas those in the control group, who did not receive supplementation,
experienced a decline in median vitamin D3 levels (11 (8–14.3) to 9 (8–16.3) ng/mL; Δ −2 (−4 to +1); Wilcoxon
p=0.01). Supplementation was also associated with greater downregulation of VEGF and C-Myc expression (p<0.05).
The overall response rate was higher in the vitamin D3 group of patients (63.3% vs. 25.8%; p<0.01), and median PFS
was significantly prolonged (9.1 vs. 6.5 months; p=0.028). Conclusion: Our study suggests that vitamin D3 enhances
fluoropyrimidine efficacy in metastatic CRC patients by modulating angiogenesis and proliferation pathways, supporting
its potential as a safe, low-cost adjunct to chemotherapy.
