Assessment of Health Literacy and Health Risk Behaviors among the Elderly in Geriatric Clubs at Assiut City, Egypt

Research Abstract
Elderly people with inadequate health literacy less mindful of health behaviors significance. Study aim: assess health literacy and health risk behaviors among elderly. Design: Descriptive design of research. Settings: the study carried out at two geriatric clubs in Assiut city (Geriatric club in Legitimacy Assembly and Geriatric club of Islamic cultural center). Convenient sample total coverage of all elderly members (200 elderly ) and agreed to participate in the study from (from the half of March 2017 to the end of December 2017). Four tools were used. Tool I: self questionnaire sheet: include personal characteristics and health risk behaviors related questions. Tool II: body mass index (BMI) calculation. Tool III: assessment of health literacy scale. Tool IV: Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine Scale (REALM). Results: 75% of elderly participants had inadequate (low) level of health literacy, also there was statistical significant difference between health literacy level and age P=0.034. Conclusion: low health literacy associated with health behaviors and poor adherence of prescribed medications. Recommendation: evidence-based communication strategies as ‘teach back’ method more effective with clients.

Relation between Nutritional Status and Chronic Diseases among Elderly at Assiut City

Research Abstract
Abstract The occurrence of chronic diseases weakens the activity of the elderly and affects the nutritional status which exposes them to the risk of malnutrition as a result of poor health. The study aimed to assess the relation between nutritional status and chronic diseases among elderly at Assiut City. Subject and method: Descriptive cross sectional research design, Convenient sample were used in this study. The study was conducted on 1033 patients in outpatients' clinics at main Assiut university hospital. The study included two tools; the first included socio-demographic, medical history, nutritional habits and oral health, while the second mini-nutritional assessment scale. Results: 59.5% of the studied sample suffering from hypertension, while 36.5%, 37.4%of them had diabetes mellitus and orthopedic diseases respectively, and 65.1% of studied sample had mild Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). Also 63.1% of studied sample at risk for malnutrition, and 30.7% were well-nourished. The study concluded that There were a significant relation between mini-nutritional assessment scale and different chronic diseases. The study Recommended that: Establish periodically nutritional assessment of elderly to identify at risk by using Mini-Nutritional Assessment scale and develop continuous health education program for elderly and their caregiver about nutritional need specifically with chronic diseases.

Knowledge, practices and nurses attitudes about end of life care at critical units: Suggested booklets

Research Abstract
Abstract Background: Nurses in ICU play a significant role in providing end of life nursing care to patients complained from life-threatening illnesses and did not response positively to medical treatment by assessing their needs and providing comprehensive nursing care Aim of the study: Evaluate Nurses knowledge, attitudes and practices about end of life care at critical units. Design: Descriptive research design. Methods: (65) ICU nurses included in the study assigned to the medical and general ICUs at Assuit University Hospital, Egypt. Results: (61.5%) of the ICU nurse their knowledge about EOL nursing care is unsatisfactory. (58.6%) their level of practice was poor and their attitude toward EOL care was unfavorable by (72.3%). Conclusions: the study concluded that ICU nurses did not have enough knowledge and practice about EOL care and they need a clear policy to improve their attitude toward applying it. Recommendations: Educational programs and suggested booklets must be carried out for nurses in critical care units.

Quality of Life among the Elderly patient with Urinary Incontinence: a Hospital Based Study at Assiut Governorate ,Egypt

Research Abstract
Abstract Background: Urinary incontinence had adverse effects on quality of life among elderly subjects through both physical and psychosocial consequences and a significant impact on physical health and daily functioning. Study Aim: assess the quality of life among elderly patient with urinary incontinence. Subject & methods: A descriptive research design was used. the study was conducted in urology outpatient at Assiut university and El Eman general hospital. The total sample size was 395 elderly. Two tools were used. The 1st tool: Interview questionnaire include personal characteristics, the 2nd tool: Urogenital Distress Inventory and Adapted Incontinence Impact Questionnaires to assess quality of life among elderly patients with urinary incontinence. Results: 79.6% of elderly patients had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding UI. There was relationship between QOL & urinary incontinence. It have a significant impact on the QOL for elderly patient. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence has significant negative impact on the QOL among elderly subjects (physical activity, social relationships/ travel, and emotional health). Recommendations: providing an Educational programs to increase the knowledge of the elderly patients about factors associated with urinary incontinence among the elderly people can guide actions to reduce and prevent occurrence of disease.
