Heart Attacks of Patients with Diabetes: A Study in Assiut University

Under supervision of Dr. Lubna Farag, Prof. of Internal Medicine, and Dr. Salah Abdel-Azim Aarjoun, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Physician, Ahmed Bahiey-Eldeen Ahmed, Assistant Lecturer of internal medicine, defended his Doctoral Dissertation on the impact of hyperglycemia in the intensive care on the reshaping of the left ventricle after myocardial infarction (Heart Attack). The study also aims at comparing the traditional treatment to the treatment with intensive insulin to restore normal blood glucose level.   The research was conducted on 122 patients with acute infarction, divided according to the level of blood glucose; those of diabetic history. Samples were divided into a group of normal glucose level; a group of glucose level ranging above 140 mg/dl but having no diabetic history; and a diabetic group. An ultrasonic diagramming of the heart muscle was undertaken from the date of admission throughout the 12 months of follow up. Results of the study evidenced the existence of a relationship between the glucose level at the time of admission to the intensive care during the occurrence of myocardial infarction and the reshaping of the left ventricle irrespective of any prior diabetic history, but the study did not trace any better effect of using intensive insulin than the use of traditional treatment methods.
