Identification and Estimation of Leucine Aminopaptidase Activity in the Serum and Ascitic Fluid of Patients with Schistomiasis

Research Abstract
The activity and electrophoretic mobility of leucine amino peptidase (LAP) were assessed in the sera of 100 patients with different clinical stages of Schistoisoma haematobium infection as well as in 20 samples of ascetic fluids obtained from patients with bilharzial hepatosplenomegaly associated with Ascities matched with 20 healthy adult males sample as control. Generally LAP activity was significantly higher in all patients. The activity of serum LAP showed a progressive rise with the advance in the clinical condition. The highest level was encountered in the sera of patients with cancer of the urinary bladder and liver metastasis. leucine amino peptidase was considerably found in the ascetic fluid. The ratio of the activity of LAP in the ascetic fluid to its activity in the serum of the same patients was 1:4.5 where the enzyme diffuses from the blood to the ascetic fluid. The enzyme detected by electrophoresis, in serum or ascetic fluid LAP migrated as a single component in the 1- globulin fraction. The results are discussed and compared with those in the literature.

Lipids and Lipoproteins Abnormalities in Friedreich's Ataxia

Research Abstract
The study included 18 patients with clinical manifestations of Friedreich's ataxia and 19 healthy subjects for control. Serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein A, apolipoprotein B and phospholipids were determined for patients and control group. ECG was done for every patients. Most of the patients were males (83%) while 17% were females. The study showed that the total serum cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol were significantly raised in the group B (sporadic cases) while they remained within the control level in the group A (familial cases). Serum triglycerides were significantly raised in both groups of the patients. Serum Apoprotein A and B were significantly decreased in a (familial) while in group B (sporadic), Apoprotein A was significantly decreased and Apoprotein B was not significantly altered. Serum phospholipids did not show significant changes in any of the two groups. E.C.G examination showed evidence of myocardial ischemia in the form of low voltage Q.R.S , depression of S.T. segment, flattening or inversion of T wave in pericardial and limb leads. The changes were found in 80% of the patients of the familial group (A) and in 37% of the patients of the sporadic group (B). These findings are analyzed and discussed on the lights of the previous literature.
