Adnexal torsion in the first trimester of pregnancy: A
case report

Research Abstract
Adnexal torsion is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain during pregnancy. It is frequently associated with ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) or with ovarian masses, mainly of functional origin. It is uncommon for a normal-sized ovary to undergo torsion. Torsion of the ovary during pregnancy is common during third trimester. Adnexal torsion is rarely bilateral and is more common on the right side, perhaps because the sigmoid colon leaves a limited space for left adnexal mobility. Here we report a case of 23-year-old primigravida with 8 weeks pregnancy presented with sever left abdominal pain. Left abdominal tenderness was detected. Transabdominal ultrasound scan reported left adnexal torsion. Laparotomy and then left salpingo-oophorectomy were performed.

Assessment of Knowledge and Practices of Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia Regarding the disease and preventive measures of its pain crisis

Research Abstract
Background: Sickle cell disease and sickle cell anemia are serious, inherited conditions affecting the blood and various organs in the body. Sickle cell anemia is more common in people whose origins are sub-saharan Africa, India, Saudi Arabia and Mediterranean countries. Aim of the study: to evaluate the extent of knowledge and practice of patients with sickle cell regarding the disease and preventive measures of its pain crisis. Material and method: descriptive correlative design was used in the study. The subjects of the study consisted of 73 adult sickle cell anemic patients in hematological department and outpatient clinic at Assuit University Hospital. Structured questionnaire using of open ended and closed ended questions was used based on literature review. Results: More than half of patients 54.8 % had hemoglobin level of 8 mg/dl. Majority of patients 86.3% had knowledge score more than 70% and nearly half of them 50.7% had satisfactory practice score ranged from 60-70%. Conclusion: although patients' knowledge level in this study was high, the practical score level of nearly half of patient was satisfied. Recommendation: conduct continuing education for primary health care professionals to improve their ability to care for, and provide guidance to patients and their families with sickle cell disease.

Serum Prolactin and Blood Glucose Levels Before and After an Oral Glucose –Load In Patients with Diabetes Mellitus and Liver Cirrhosis

Research Abstract
Serum prolactin and blood glucose levels were measured in 13 patients with type II diabetes mellitus and nine patients with liver cirrhosis (Bilharzial or post- hepatic or mixed) in addition to 13 normal controls. Basal serum prolactin levels in diabetic patients did not differ significantly from levels reported for control, while those of liver cirrhosis patients were significantly higher than those of both diabetic patients and controls. After oral glucose load, all the patients showed decreased glucose tolerance accompanied with hyperprolactinemia that was more apparent and persistent in liver-cirrhosis patients. Serum insulin levels that were feasible to be measured in six liver-cirrhosis patients, showed concomitant delayed insulin rise following the glucose load that was maintained longer than in control. These findings of glucose intolerance and hyperprolactinemia were discussed and interpreted on a suggestion to be secondary to various mechanisms including peripheral insulin resistance , gluconeogenesis and/or altered response of pancreatic B-cells to glucose loading
