Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, affirmed the University’s commitment to implementing the directives of the President of Egypt to combat smoking on university campuses. The initiative aims to establish a “Tobacco-Free Generation”, providing a healthy and safe academic environment while reinforcing the University’s role in promoting public health and raising awareness among students and staff.
The announcement was made during the regular December 2025 meeting of the University’s Community Service and Environmental Development Sector Council, chaired by Professor Mohamed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and attended by council members.
Professor Mohamed Adawy highlighted the sector’s activities and achievements in spreading awareness about sustainable development goals. He emphasized the University’s focus on environmental protection and safety, including the proper disposal of waste, energy and water conservation, and the full enforcement of smoking bans on campus, aligning with environmental regulations and the broader sustainable development agenda.
The meeting resulted in several key decisions, including the full implementation of the President’s recommendations regarding the elimination of smoking on university campuses, reinforcing the “Tobacco-Free Generation” initiative, and monitoring the timeline for a series of community outreach campaigns running from 2025 to January 2026.
Council members also reviewed various environmental and community issues, such as the damage caused by attaching signs and advertisements to trees and palm trees using nails or sharp tools, the importance of maintaining green spaces, organizing awareness campaigns on cybercrime and safe internet usage for secondary school students in Assiut (from October 26, 2025, to April 19, 2026), and reviewing precautionary measures to mitigate winter rainfall impacts.
